Why do I not see any negative comments on the XS amongst these listings ?
Most peolple I speek to who have or had an XS regret buying it.

want everything to jump out of the ground as they walk by.
The Explorer takes a little learning and some of the people are unwilling to learn anything new.
I started with a SOV and was told by everyone it was a big mistake well they were wrong and I got many good finds that others walked right over.
Now I have the Explorer and am getting more from the worked over sites that other units have just walked over and missed.
I also Have a Tesoro Lobo (LST) and it is also a good unit that people won't or can't take the time to learn, It has found over 50 silver coins for me.

so you see thats why there arent to many
complaints,thanksthanks guys

who would that be? do they post anywhere/? send them here and we will try and help them out

Authur I am new to detecting and my first machine is an explorer xs. Problems yes I have had problems, mostly caused by my own expectations. I too thought old coins would jump out at me, all I had to do was turn on my xs. What a disapointment to find out I would have to learn quite a lot to find old coins. Pissed off, you bet. I spent a grand on a machine to make me rich and it hasn't. But I hung in there and learned, both from the manual and from reading posts from these guys trying to help us ignorant of the real reason for detecting, for the fun of it. Now I am finding older coins and a lot of clad thanks to the guys in this forum. My friend who talked me into this hobby is a certified white XLT man but he is now thinking of getting an xs. He has been at this hobby for 5 years and I am finding more than him. I am not prejudiced against any brand of detector but I think you have to go some to beat the xs. Would I buy another xs? Yes I would, in a heartbeat.

I am also new to the xs less than a month ,but JIM VOLKES and the forum has helped me alot also bought a excaliber last month and have a hard time deciding which to use. I have found the people who dont like minelabs never owned one and are usually talking about a friend of a friend, Whats not to like??

Not true,
There are occasionally negative comments: Too heavy, hard to pinpoint, and steep learning curve. Getting in shape or getting rid of stock coil can solve the first. Time, experience, a probe, and advice from the forums can solve the second two.

Well, it's premature as I have only had the XS for 2 days of hunting, plus a day of studying the manual and Sabisch book. I am experienced with the DFX - both machines IMHO have great attributes and also some real shortfalls. Both reflect some brilliant engineering, and some downright lousy design too.
Bad on the XS? The manual isn't very good, and Sabisch's book is a help, but not so great either. The headphones are cheesy for a top of the line machine, and the 1/8 jack is stupid, if you ask me. Put a damn normal 1/4 jack on it, Minelab, so people can use other headphones without adapters. I bought a slightly used XS on ebay, and received it with one channel in the phones dead and the other channel occasionally cracking out, though the phones look mint.
My big complaint on the XS (after 2 days hunting only) is the UGLY sounds, especially the anemic sound it gives for coins. A coin sound should make you happy, like a dinner bell. It's hard to want to dig the XS's pitiful falsetto coin chirp. And quarters sound the same as penny/dimes, too! Duh. With a Whites, a quarter sound makes you happy, because it's almost always something good. With the XS, after a tiring day and being sick of digging pennies I could be passing up high-conductive stuff like quarters or nice silver jewelry if I don't dig every penny.
Also, the user interface of menus seems stupid. Buttons have names that make no sense. However, it's far easier than the DFX to use once you know the roadmap. The DFX has an absolutely idiotic interface. You can never see your important settings without tons of scrolling, and changing a setting may require pushing a dozen buttons or more! They also need to have at least a DOZEN user-made program slots instead of 4, and allow quick toggling between with only an air/ground balance needed. That's means going to back to a modified but unsaved program after a brief change to a completely different program. Whites has gone to great lengths to create the most user-adjustable detector ever made by far, and then made it a HUGE pain in the ass to actually use that capability in the field! The programming and memory requirement to change these things are extremely easy compared to the other code they have had to write in this thing. It's like they have very bright people working on the discrimination etc., and a leave it to a real bonehead to design the interface and write the manual.
Had to vent. Sorry. IMHO,

Complaints of the XS being too hard, regrets, etc etc etc, this is a CLASSROOM for LEARNERS, true the XS is a hard detector to get used to, if it was easy to use it wouldnt be as good. Ive had my XS for a 1 1/2 years and Im by nomeans an expert using it, in fact im still learning, i read comments here and apply them and where i find something that really helps its great. The only complaint i have is i havent got the time to use it as much as i would love to , but when you find something your searching for then thats the best part, IT TAKES TIME, BUT WHENYA GET THE HANG OF IT ITS THE BEST DETECTOR IN THE WORLD

Mr Arthur.
Perhaps you didn't read the top headder.
I haven't removed any post, and Gary didn't mention anything about it, but you should pay attention to the ground rules of the forum before complaining, and posting.
This is a classroom forum. Users come here to learn about the Explorer, not bitch about it. If you feel it's not the detector for you, change, and get on with it. Go to a different forum.

its all in the way you swing the explorer, a quarter definately gives a different response and display on the smart screen than either a dime or a penny.. you must keep the coil close the the ground and sweep very steady and just off the target and back.. if you make big left and right sweeps you get a warble on the edges.. when checking out a target never move the coil far enough right ort left that the edges of the coil go over the target.. it helps to run fast response and normal audio.. but either way a quarter will read on the extreme right top of the screen, wher a dime will read just left of that and a penny just a hair more left.. keep using it, and it will all come together

Sorry if I offended
Wasn't bitching or having a go at Explorers or there users. I just can't understand why there doesn't seem to be any negative questions or messages.

with the explorer, but they wouldn't want waste their time on this site. For the most part, the people on this site want to learn the explorer because it is a rather difficult machine to master. I have had mine for 2 months and i am still on the learning curve. Although, I do get amazed at the depth of the machine, it is not that easy to pick deep coins out of trashy areas without a lot of experience. And if you pay close attention(which you have not) there have been scathing comments from people that did not have the luck as you see most people getting. They got information on how to fix their problems and that was that. I was a white's user and coming to the explorer the complaints are few, but there are some(price, weight, new sounds). I can live with them because I think this is probably the best detector you can buy to get deep coins.

I have used the Minelab Explorer xs for about two months now. I find the screen to be the worst thing about theh Minelab. Either I am going blind and dont know it or that screen on the Minelab is almost impossible to see outside in the sun anytime while hunting! Minelab needs to do something about that screen visibility. I have a Whites XLT which gives me almost no problem with its screen. I can actually see it! Does anyone else have this same problem? Maybe the Minelab is more of a winter machine when the sun isnt shinning. So there are four things I wish Minelab would change.
1.BETTER SCREEN DISPLAY
2.Smaller coil 8" and overall lighter machine
3.Headphone adapter size...1/4 inch like Americans like it.
4. Make better distinguishing tones when finding a Quarter vs dime a penny etc.
5.And last but not least...Sell it with a stand on it like it should of been instead of having to buy Sunrays stand at $19.99...what were they thinking anyway?
6.Very few custom programs online for it...hint hint...if anyone has some custom jewelry or coins programs email me....thanks.
Great things I like about the Minelab.
1. Great Depth
2. Nice custom programs one can make
3. Best machine on the market consdering

in these postings that cannot be overcome by understanding the manual and implementing suggestions read here and on other forums. That is except for the weight which is overcome by useage time. I am no expert with the XS for sure, but I have found solutions to all of the other issues raise here either in the manual, the forum or Sabisch. This is not a machine that will give you its fullest without some commitment on the users part - that means time in the field, study, talking to other users, etc.

Don't know if it's from local condition, but I have had many cents and dimes repeat at the absolute upper right corner, where quarters should be. Also had a few quarters surprise me that read lower and more left of there. This is after repeated small sweeps to let it focus in or the target.
I am getting deeper on the XS than with the DFX, especially with the 10.5 DD. Probably a little better also with the 7.25. However, I have never tried the DFX DD, which I expect would go deeper for me than the stock 9.5. I hate to say depth is everything, because there is so much more in features to make detecting better and more enjoyable, but I need more than the 6 to 6.5" I get from the DFX in local ground. Depth being equal, my choice would be the DFX at this point. Of course I am much more experienced with it.

The minelabs are not for everyone and perhaps it is not for you. Not being negative, I just feel that each of us is comfortable with one brand or another whether it be the shadow, garretts, whites, Fishers etc. and that is the one they should use for the most success.

Jim,
I'm trying hard with the XS and I hope I warm up to it, but thus far it's been somewhat frustrating, so I sound negative. I plan to work hard with learning it for at least a month. I am searching for my machine; don't love any of them yet.
