It was sooooooooooo hot at the beach by 9AM this morning, so I only hunted for 2 1/2 hrs. Hank was golfing in his league...must've been hot on that golf course, too.

High tide was approaching so I had to hunt in wet and dry sand

Found the "Police Sergeant" down about 6" in wet sand. Mid-high "crackling" tone.

It's gold -plated , I'm quite sure..and is either a pin or badge .and on its way back to NYC Police Dept. tomorrow morning .

Here's some pics

thanks for looking

Magz,

Nice find. Is there a hallmark stamp on the back of the badge? There are lots of fakes out there, as police badge collecting is a big money deal now. I checked my Orlando PD retirement badge, and there's a stamped manufacturers hallmark on it. The are only a few manufacturers that provide badges to all US police agencies. Badges issued to actice duty personnel belong to the agency, in your case, NYPD. If you contact NYPD, and they actually respond, they will probably ask you to return it to them. They would not release contact information on an active or retired officer.

If you want to try and return it to the Sergeant it was issued to, it may take some work to track it down. Your best bet might be a local chapter of NYPD retires in your area. I worked with a retired NYPD Sergeant, but I lost contact with him a few years back. Might be able to track him down. I'm not really into badge collecting, but I'm sure there are numerous collecting site out there with someone, who could authenticate it.

Good luck!

that it may not be a bona fide badge...I 've seen many of these on e-bay and various web sites, I am thinking it might be just a jewelry memento , but with the badge number on it ( whether it is true or bogus) I thought it best to send it to NYPD as directed.

I do not collect badges, and I don't sell on e-bay either..so I'll let them do what they see fit with this one

.If they cannot track it down, then whomever in the Dept. wants it, they are welcome to it.
