I have a couple of REALLY basic questions!

I have heard of people finding nails, meteorites, gold, and old coins. Will this machine detect all of these, or only some of these?

Also, I hear about adjusting the machines to detect one thing or another: what does that mean?

I am very much looking forward to taking this machine out for a test spin, once the ground has thawed and after I buy a battery. My home used to be a homestead a long time ago, and I am fairly sure that the back area near the fence has never been touched by a bull dozer or any kind of earthmover. It might be pretty cool to turn up old horseshoe nails, broken tools, a dropped coin,or whatever! Though, that will have to wait until the ground thaws at least a little!
 
What model Teknetics is it? New? Used? Manual with it? Sounds like you have a neat spot to get started hunting on. And yes, it will detect anything metal. Including everything you mentioned. If it has a manual with it, give it a good read. It will answer most of your questions and get you started. If not, some here will be able to get you started once we know what model you have. Just curious as to what model , they are all good detectors .Read the manual , read the forums and look at some youtube videos . Don't expect to get rich and be patient , the more you use it the better you will get . Good Luck and Happy New Years.

Yes, I have the owners manual:I was simply not seeing the forest for the trees!

I should have been more patient: just because they discussed false positives and the different tones that trash gives off FIRST, did not mean that the basics were not explained I got too impatient!LOL!
 
Don't worry about "trash" signals on your homesite. Anything that old could be very interesting, even if only a rusted hunk. We have found lots of old items that make great yard art or we display them in our home as knickknacks.

Sure, you may find things are cool the first few times but after a dozen or so rusty nails, you maybe have dug enough of them. Then you can start pl;aying with the discrimination features to help ID and eliminate them while still finding other items. It all comes with practice and no detector yet made is 100% correct, no matter what the claims might be. They can come close on coins, but odd-shapes and oxidation can play tricks. That's where experience helps more than anything.

Don't be afraid to try it out indoors or outdoors on warmer days. Snow sledding hills can be fun to hunt after the kids have had a few tumbles.

Congratulations! I can tell that you will have lots of fun with your new detector. While you are waiting for the ground to thaw, I suggest that you read and re-read, and re-re-read your owners manual. Keep it handy and study/brush up on it. I keep my owners manual right next to my easy chair, for easy access. For example G2/GB users, whats the typical VDI reading for a nickel? Aha! Gotcha! (Answer: fifty eight). Have fun and good luck.
 
Read the manual............ check you tube for some videos of that machine being used. Make notes of things your not sure about and ask here.

Air tests can teach you some basics........... Welcome to the forum... looking forward to your questions and later on seeing your finds..
 
All it takes is one good find and you will be hooked for life.
My first detector was the alpha also.
One of my first finds was a 1939 walking liberty half dollar just along the edge of my driveway.
The house was built in the 40"s
Be sure to check along both sides of any place cars were parking at your house
Clean your yard out and practice your technique digging and filling holes before you venture to far from home :happy:

I recently bought my first Teknetics, the Gamma, from Monte....I see from your Signature that you have used all of the so-called "Greek" models. With your experience, how would you rate the Gamma against the Delta and Omega on the following points ?

#1...Finding Gold Jewelry in Parks and Sports Fields.

#2...Finding Silver Jewelry in Parks and Sports Fields.

#3...Finding Silver Coins (Dime to Quarter-size)

I see a lot of talk in this forum about the Delta , Omega and of course the T

Originally, I had thought about buying the Delta, however, my brother-inlaw called and offered to buy me a new 'tector as an early Christmas gift and I could pick whatever I wanted ! So I decided to move on up to the Gamma 6000. Yeah, he's a terrific guy !

So far, I have only used the Gamma at my Village park. This is a fairly old park and the trash in the ground is deplorable ! .. I know it has taken years for this much stuff to accumulate (bottle caps & seals, can slaw, foil, beaver tail pull-tabs and the newer stay-tabs, you name it ! ), but it seems like there are an awful lot of people that can't walk 10 feet to a garbage can ! :rolleyes:

This park has two separate Tot-lots, a large asphalt Basketball court surrounded by grass, with two poles at each end, baseball diamond and Socker field, nice Pavilion with picnic tables, a new amphitheater where Rock music bands play on weekends during warm weather and asphalt jogging paths all around the park. Plenty of opportunity for coin and jewelry drops !

The majority of my good finds are coins that come from the grassy areas near the basketball poles, where jump-shots keep the coins replenished and also from the grass along the edges of the jogging paths. The only jewelry I have found at this park is just cheap costume stuff.

My best jewelry find came from a different Park about 1/2 hour away and that was a .925 Sterling silver cross pendant. I was on my way back to the car at the end of a hunt and decided to leave my Compadre turned ON as I was walking out of a field in a straight line to the parking lot with the detector coil pointed out in front of me (no lateral swinging). I was surprised when the Compadre signaled ! The cross was down in the ground about 4 or 5 inches, but it's now in my treasure box ! ;)
