Sounds nice John...........BUT..............they will tell you it is worth that but selling it for that much is another story.

I inheirited a man's 18k gold and large diamond Masonic ring. It weighs almost an ounce and the mine cut diamond is over 3 carats. The relative who owned it died long before I was born and was a member of FDRs cabinet when he was govenor of NY. So I paid 50 bucks to have it appraised by the best jeweler in town and it appraised for almost 30 grand. I asked what I could sell it for and their figure was about 10 grand. The gemologist suggested cutting the stone into 3 more modern cut diamonds of aproximately 1 carat, 3/4 carat, and 1/2 carat and a few accent stones. Since then mine cut diamonds have made a comeback but I have still never been offered over $7500 for the stone.

My experience is jewelers appraisals are 3 to 4 times what retail value is.

That said, it is a fab ring and I'm glad it turned out to be a diamond.

Yeah they appraise it at whet they would sell it for not what they would pay for it. Jewelry, especialy diamonds, have an outrageous markup. One reason I don't own jewelry. If the diamond cartels ( who manipulate the price ) would release to the market place all the diamonds they have stored in their vaults around the world you could buy diamonds for a nickel apiece.

$7500 for a 3 ct. diamond ring? That seems unfair indeed... more like wholesale price! I bought a 2.1 ct. diamond ring and it appraised at $3700 dealer cost. I paid $700 for it. I'm sure the dealer would double if not triple that $3700 once the ring was placed in their showcase! I guess we can't blame dealers for trying!! I own a 1963 Fender Stratocaster electric guitar that's worth thousands. The neck alone sells for around $2000-$4000. Unfortunately it's not the original paint finish but the present color is an original paint scheme. Still it's valued around several thousand to ten thousand dollars. Dealers are always offering me a piddly $400-$700. I tell them they can just get a look at it for that amount!!!!

The problem is what does a lay person do when he comes into something like a big diamond? The diamond community is so close and they have a thousand sources for quality, big, diamonds. What are the chances that I come across sombody with the resources to pay me what this thing is actually worth? The owner who was my mother's great Uncle, so my great great Uncle, did not keep close contact with his family after he made it big. He became head of the NY state Masons and that where the ring comes in. Had a big mansion in Albany and a lodge in the Adirondacks all while his while his brother and sister in law lived in a tenament in Utica. My great grandmother lived to be 101, I was about 8 when she passed, and wound up with all the jewelry. Big showy ring for what I thought was a secret society. You should see his wife's second engagement ring which my sister has. Next time I have to go to my safe deposit box I'll take a photo.

Great Stratocaster! I hope you play it. Those old strats have a great R & R sound. I play guitar but it took me years just to become awful at it and metal detecting really cuts into my practice time too. I have a nice older Martin D-28 which is my fav.
