I guess this is why I dig wheat cents ...

After a couple thousand wheat cents, I finally got something halfways decent, a 1924d. Only 2 million minted. The sad part is that I found it laying on my trucks floor while I was stuck in traffic over the holidays Christmas shopping, so I'm not sure where it came from. The wheat stalks in the back are AU quality, but the obverse (front) has some green dust. Any ideas how to knock that green stuff off before I stick it in storage? Is a light toothbrushing OK? I've blasted all my other wheat cents with hydrogen peroxide but now that I have a decent one I'm reluctant to do it.

Scott, my advice is to not practice anything with this coin, but to try to find other coins in your collection that aren't as valuable to use until you find something that removes that type of green dust.
Or just leave it in it's current condition rather than taking the chance of ruining it's value. Great find Scott. Bugsy

Olive Oil, soak, soak, soak, pick off the debris with a wooden toothpick. Remember wood doesn't scratch metal. One last thing to ponder, it took years to put debris on the coin, it could take along time to come off safely. Just my one cents worth.

Olive oil is a waste of time. Its best to send things like this to a professional. Send me an email and I will send you a name of a guy who does a wonderful job and is very fair on prices.

try cleaning it with a pink rubber eraser......... <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
