I half to say, 2 firsts this weekend and plenty of coins made for good hunting!

Hit a couple spots this weekend which I knew yielded older coins. 2 spots panned out good while the other 2 I knew were tough and yielded very little. Lets start out with the Clad Coinage Totals for the weekend. I recovered 37 Quarters, 72 Dimes, 3 Nickels, and 244 Pennies which brings it to a total of $19.04. I also had 2 firsts on Saturday. The first is nothing that special but I found my first 1940 Canadian Quarter with George VI on it. Usually I find either the older Canadian Quarters or the newer ones and that is why this is the first because of who is on the obverse. The second first I had, which is quite a bit rarer to find even up here, was a 1916 Canadian Half. This is the only Canadian Half-Dollar I have in my collection of coins and it makes a very nice addition to it. Even the guys I hunt with haven't found one of these and they have been detecting for 20 years or better. Funny thing about this Half and Quarter. I was talking to Randy on the way up to this spot and told him I needed to find a Half and I kept repeating myself to him a few times before we arrived at the destination. The very first coin that I dug was the Canadian Half. Talking about a sixth sense. It doesn't stop there though, I was walking along and Randy already found a Silver Washington Quarter and I said I needed to find a Silver Quarter and within 20' I dug the Canadian Quarter. Kinda spooky but in a good way. Ok, on to the other finds. My Silver total this weekend was 10. I found 1 Canadian Half dated 1916, 1 Canadian Quarter dated 1940, 6 Merc's dated 1917,1918,1925,1935,1941, and 1942-d and 2 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1946 and 1946-d. Felt good to hit 10 Silver in a weekend again. I also found 2 Junk Tokens. 1 says Charles Gebhardt, Euclid Minn. and says Good Luck in center and the back has a flag. The other says Coin Meter Token on the back and is a newer Token from a fair. I also found 1 older Jefferson Nickel dated 1940-d. I found another 32 Wheat's dated 1916-d,1919-s,1920,(2)1920-d,1927,1930,1930-d,1934,1934-d,1935,1935-d,1936-d,1937,1939,1940,(2)1941,1942-d,(2)1944-d,1944-s,(2)1945,(2)1945-d,(2)1946-d,(2)1950-d,1952-d, and 1958. I also found 2 more 1959-d Lincoln Memorial Pennies and also 1 1949 Canadian Penny. I also found a few Misc. Item which include a FORD EMBLEM that is shaped half-mooned, an old key of some sort that says BELLLOCK Patented on one side and the other says The Eagle Lock Company / Terryville, Conn. / Made In U.S.A. An odd key with a different groove on each side. I also found an old Copper Trade Ring, Part of a Gold Plated Earring, half of an old Tootsie Toy and an old License Plate Bolt. I'm back in WI now. Have a real hot job to do that will probably take a couple of weeks or more than hopefully will have some time to go detecting. We finally got a bit a rain here so I can revisit some of my better spots.

Chris

Can't wait until the return trip this weekend and I know I will have some Barber for sure since my buddy Randy got 2 Barber Dimes and an Indian Head Penny before it got dark and was time to leave. Wish me luck! :detecting:

Just wish I could have done it this year but it just has been real busy thus far. Hope your spots produce some keepers for you and look forward to maybe a post of your year end totals if that is not too much to ask. Good Luck and HH buddy and will see you next year for sure and thanks for the response.

Don't you think you should take some time off; you could get silver poisoning!? I'm worried about you.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the photos; it's a bit of a vicarious thrill to see someone else's finds.

My weekend lacked lustre compared to you. I worked around the place here getting firewood for winter, cleaning up the forest, dismantling an old grain bin. We discovered a skunk under there. Fortunately, he didn't spray, or I would have been living outside for a while. As far as metal detecting, though, I got skunked.

I was in Park Rapids today and had a little spare time there. Found a clad quarter, one dime, about 30 pennies two of which were wheaties, 1945 and 1957D, and one merc dime 1919S. Photos of the last three below.

I have seldom seen a silver half found on any detecting site I've visited, have seen more bust coins found, and many sites have Canadians who visit regularly!!! Very nice find!! Good to see your pic full of silver again as well!! Congrats!!

Park Rapids is where the one guy we were with on Sunday is from, he got 161 coins with 3 or 4 were Wheaties and a IH plus a 1877 1 Ore.
There was 4 of us at the fairgrounds in Fertile, MN. If you go to Park Rapids much you could look up Dave as he is s nice fellow and sure would love to detect with you and show you some sites.

Maybe we can work it out so we can plan to get some time out together as it would be fun. I think if we knew we could work it out.
Until then keep posting your great finds you get in Wis.

Rick

Great job and nice find on that half! I have yet to find any Canadian silver down here, but I did find a rather worn Canadian large cent! I think I also found a Ford emblem once. BTW, what the heck is a tootsie toy???

Nice finds!
I need to get out more.

Looking at my finds just makes one want to get out there and hit some nice old coins, that is for sure. Good Luck and HH if you get out and thanks again!

A Tootsie Toy is a older toy car that they use to sell. It is made of Potmetal and has hard plastic tires. The older ones were bigger and had rubber tires. I found half of a Tow Truck as I posted. Where are you located Erik? Thanks for the post and Good Luck and HH.

but not a Tootsie Toy - we had Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars growing up around here (I'm in northern New Jersey) and other assorted junk cars, but I'm not familiar with the "Tootsie" moniker.

Also, what is "an old Copper Trade Ring?" - a piece of junk jewelry or a ring for something else? I ask because I also found an old copper or brass ring once and I'm not sure what it was used for.

Thanks.

I'm sure that you had Tootsie Toy Cars back in the day. They are about half the size of the Hotwheels and Matchbox Cars. As for the trade ring, these were very common prizes and novelty items at fairs and carnivals back in the early 1900's. They have a flower like design on them, at least that is what I believe it is for the girls. I have found quite a few of them and they aren't worth much if anything.

I believe this is my 6th Half this year so far as Silver Halves go. I found 2 or 3 Clad Halves but there nothing special. What I wouldn't do to find some Bust Type coins around here close by! Good Luck and HH.

The owner is very stubborn and won't let anyone detect it since a few years back a woman sued him and won a settlement from him. She fell and either sprained her ankle badly or she had broken it I heard on a hole either from a gopher or a careless detectorist that didn't cover their holes properly. There is signs up that says Private Property / Keep Out in the entrance. Wouldn't want you to end up in the klink! Nice finds anyways and at least you didn't get skunked. Good Luck and HH.

Just kidding!! It was not the fairgrounds. I didn't even know there was a fairgrounds in Park Rapids. I was at Rice Park. I had found several wheat pennies there and knew there must still be some silver around, so I kept :detecting:

Today I was in Detroit Lakes and had an extra hour after work for :detecting: and found;

This is my first Standing Liberty quarter. Even though it is terribly worn, it was a nice find for me. The date is gone, but it has to be somewhere between 1917 and 1924. Funny how the "D" is still legible.

I'm taking some boys camping this weekend and not sure about detecting, but hope to get some done.

Happy hunting to you, James. Do try to lay off the silver for awhile, ok? Gold would be better for you.
