i cant go metal detecting because then i have people around me like if im a freak person , daammmm i feel so uncomfortable?

they ask me what are you doing?

what is that?

is that a metal detector?

what have you found with it?
 
When I first started I felt the same way, but I got use to it. I still get asked the same questions and I try to be polite answer their questions. As time went on I focus more on using my metal detector and less on the people.

Same as john. I had a few small children ask there parent what I was doing so I stop and ask the kid if he/she want to see what i found and show them. they smile and either ask a question or say thanks and we go on our way.
 
Most of the places I hunt are far removed from civilization. But on the occassion I am hunting in a public area, I usually answer the first few questions.:look: Then I explain I can't hear them when I have my headphones on. I put my headphones back on and start detecting.:detecting: I don't dig anything. I just swing the coil. If I get a good signal, I make a mental note of where it is and keep on "detecting". :smoke: The only reason I will stop is to ask them to please not stand in front of the coil. After a few minutes, they typically get bored watching me and head off to do something else. :sleepy: After they've gone, I'll retrace my steps and retrieve the goodies I passed up. JMHO HH Randy
 
you can always just wear a bike helmet and chew small pieces of alka seltzer when you start foaming at the mouth they surely will go away ! hahaha
 
Hunt REALLY early....or REALLY late. I'm a caver, so I have several headlamps. Guess which way I went.:detecting:

Plan ahead and go when there are less people. Personally, I LIKE detecting at night with a headlamp.
 
Talk to them. Find out where the best spot are from them, listen. Go early thats when the older people are out. They are more wealth of info than any website, book, or library. When you see them, then they see you, be the FIRST to say hi, good morning beautiful day or so. Let them say hi back. Then they are more than likely going to ask you a question so be ready. Be polite and the info will flow from them. I had two older men(60-70s I am 36) this morning, not kidding, they got in a argument over which hot spot they told me would produce more change or goodies. I was writing down info faster than you can imagine. They lived in the area for 40 years or so. Their kids built the tree houses in the park. They told me all the bushes and trees the kids played around before the toy structers were installed and the spots before the park was delevoped. This park is small. There is no info like this that a museum or a book or even the net can tell you. Kinda goes with the the saying if it's not swinging your not detecting.

Also if you are uncomfortable, don't do it, that simple. There are places you can find without people around. Going around acting dumb or retarded or foaming at the mouth is going to just make people not like this hobby more. No need to be rude to people really is there? People are curious and that's just nature and your out in nature so get used to it. Instead of just ignoring or putting on headphones maybe say " hey hate to cut this short......but the better half only gives me a couple hours to play in the dirt and you know us boys and dirt" people laugh. Or my favorite is with kids is to ask them(nicely) "if you wanted to hide a treasure around here*look around like your looking for a spot* where would you hide it". I am willing to bet you will find at least a couple pieces of clad. Plus the kids usually start looking around. I know this already because I ask my kids that every park or school I hit. Clad might not be your thing but it is what it is.... Money

Good luck and just relax a little. I might have slacked a hour of time talking but I saved a weeks worth of work pulling crap to find the hot spots. Don't be the weird guy with the metal detector. Be the nice guy that everyone tells where the good spots are.
 
Whenever someone asks what or how I'm doing, I always try to take the time to answer any and all of their questions. By doing so you'd be surprised at how many times they will volunteer information about new places to hunt. Sure I may lose 10 or 15 minutes of hunting time, but our sport has now gained a new fan while I've made a new friend and maybe found a new site to detect.
 
HI! I TOO HAVE ALOT OF QUESTIONS ASKED. MOST PEOPLE ARE JUST VERY INTERESTED,SOME ARE ANNOYING. TIMES MUST BE BAD,AS ON GUY ASKED ME IF HE COULD DIG FOR ME. KEEP DIGGING,WE ARE CLEANING UP PEOPLES LOSSES!
 
BADBAJA: Totally agree with you, we are the ambassador's for the hobby, many good leads have come to me because I will always answer questions and talk to the public.most are asking because they are interested.

I think of the best explanations of how these things work then give the most technical explanation I can and they just seem to go away. They just do not seem to want to understand the science involved no matter how hard I try.. Now If they start talking history and 100 year old houses, well then they have my ear.

For the most part, the adults are genuinely interested but it's the kids that are a real bother. Most kneel down and try to help me dig (with their hands) and this really bothers me. I'm a former teacher so it bothers me to shoo them away and I try to humor them and in some cases, have given them a few memorials which really excites them. Wish I could find a humane way to get rid of them.
