I have a question about the Explorer XS

A friend of mine told me about this forum. While he hunts with a Garrett; I use an Explorer XS.
I was wondering if any of the XS users here are still happy with theirs...and why they haven't gotten a newer machine such as the E-trac or SE or Explorer2.

Are any of the features on the SE really much different or I guess better than on my XS?
I really want to stay with an explorer and I have also read about the minelab pro coil and some other ones.

My XS is just getting pretty beat up and I'm due for a new detector.
 
Hi Dippodigger. Welcome to the forum. Although I'm no expert on the explorers, the major diff. btwn the XS and SE are on the digital screen. The XS gives a Cond. value and a probable icon, where the SE gives both a Fer. & Cond. value. This is just my opinion, I did upgrade from the XS to the SE. Was it worth it -- Yes -- it got my son-in-law into metal det. :wiggle: They are both great machines.

It sounds like my XS is in the same condition as yours.:buds: I've had it for about 18 months and only put a bit over a 100 hours on it. Had a pretty major break through with it last week end with the discovery of using audio 2 and fast on. It makes telling what targets are so easy. after struggling with it before that, I am just amazed at how well a change in setting can improve your ability to tell what's what.
I am considering an upgrade, but as I've spent a few thousand dollars over the last 13 months on detecting gear, I'm going to hold out till I either cave into temptation, or the XS dies.:devil: Which ever comes first.:angel::rofl:
The newer models have faster computer processors and the E-Trac seems to be more stable on targets and is less susceptible to being fooled by iron. The E-Trac is also far more comfortable to swing, even though it's heavier. they feel like they only weigh 1.5kgs (The XS weighs 1.9kgs). The ergonomics are just superb.

I wouldn't worry about upgrading. I still use an XS, when somebody with another machine can show me a coin that I can't hear maybe I will think about it. XS has everything you need. I believe that there is a lot of hype with new machines and coils. I put the pro-coil on last year and have not taken it off, but mostly for weight - I really think the stock coil would be doing just as good.
My XS is getting trashed (7 years) so now I don't what I am going to do when it gives out. Maybe just buy a used XS2 or maybe and SE. I believe it's all in the ears and location of hunt.
How is your friend doing with the Garrett?
 
Here is my take on the Exp series the first upgrade to the exp2 the threshold has more adjustment /the bottom rod was changed to a round carbon fiber the headphone jack was changed from 1/8 to 1/4 and the digital ferrous was added and a little faster processor The SE faster still and vco pinpointing was added pitch hold also and on the later se pro the pro coil which is the best coil Minelab ever made Now the e- trac the display was changed to run disc instead of running horizontal it runs vertical also this MD runs great in auto and is allot more sable then the others I think they all go deep the biggest improvement that would cost the least would to get a pro coil hope this helps and if I forgot anything please speak up HH
 
my friend does very good with his Garrett but he isn't able to get a hit on some of the deeper coins that I do.

He finds his share of good items though.
 
I've been using my XS for many years and have no intention of upgrading to a new detector. Why mess with a good thing ??? I'm still pulling indian heads and silver out of parks that others will tell you are hunted out.
 
I've hunted with Ed (Upstate NY) and Kirk (Andrus) and I too still use my XS. Until someone builds a detector that digs 'em out of the ground for me, I'm not changing- my XS is awesome to this day. Stick with it and good luck.

I still use the XS as well. When other machines start outhunting me (and not by one or 2 coins), then I will think about an upgrade. But until then, the XS will be my detector of choice.
 
I think the E-Trac is the most user friendly of the Explorer "series" but it's mostly comfort issues and minor enhancements. Any Explorer or E-Trac is equally matched and will find the same stuff in my opinion. It's more about the skill of the operator than the hardware. If you are doing well with the XS, I'd stick with it until something goes wrong and then buy another one. One item that I really do encourage people to get is the Pro coil, it's a good one.
