I hunt many old beaches..I like 'em. Yesterday's beach hunting

was at low tide at one of these old beaches

In this area..exactly where I was standing and digging, there used to be rows and rows of cottages many years ago; people came from near and far to vacation here in the summer months.

then in the '50's...there was a series of floods that wiped out the cottages totally....and out of these homes fell all the coins, jewelry, and home appliances ( I find all kinds of remnants of appliances...gas pipes , gas lamp fixtures..) It was tragic...people lost everything

It is amazing to me that I can now stand way out in the ocean at low tide exactly over where these cottages were...fascinating to me.
Over the years the topography changed dramatically and moved the sand bars, the shore line, etc. so now where there were once cottages, there is the ocean floor.
Next time I go there, I will take some photos and post them

p.s. I got all this information from a "70 something" gentleman who lived at that beach as a child. He walks his and his neighbor's 4 dogs every day and we stop of chat for a few minutes... He is intrigued at the things I find....he, his dogs, and I have become "beach buddies"

make for some good detecting areas but it is sad to think of those who had to go through the tragedies..and some who never made it out of the tragedy alive.

The topography does change. I have a street map program (Delorme Street Atlas USA 2004 Plus)that I use alot. It is interesting to note that I think it was Christmas 2005 when there was the Sunami that hit India and other countries in that area because the earth was shook by an earthquake). Because of the magnitude of the earthquake it shook the earth not only enough to cause the Sunami but it also moved the planet axis.

Delorme shortly after the earthquake came out with an up-date program for this mapping program...it made the adjustments from where the axis once was to where it is now. How much did the earth move on its axis from where it once was to where it is now I do not know.

I do know this...I have a Michigan reference book from the library that provide latitude and longitude of all the cities of Michigan going back to the beginning of the state. Where those cities coordinates are in the book....the are not the same place in the Delorme map program! Probably a reason why this is no longer a Reference Book - Not To Be Removed From The Libray to just another book on the shelves...as it is not accurate any more.

It does come close to the cities...so Michigan isn't like the New North Carolina as far as location and weather goes. I just checked and see that the "Michigan Atlas & Gazetteer" also made by Delorme was published in 2006. Wonder if it made the updates before publishing or not???? Christmas 2005 to publishing in 2006 isn't much time for updating maps before publishing. Maybe I should write them and ask eh?

Things change...standing over old cottages now on the bottom of the ocean would give me a strange feeling too.

just love history! It is so cool how we can learn about things from the past to help us find the things we are looking for!

Mike

Yes,
I love all eras of history..from the ancient Egyptians to the present...fascinating

By all means, Mike..let me know when you are passing through..stop by for dinner and some detecting.

I used to go to Maine on vacations...I love it there...near Old Orchard beach....all aong the shore line in that area.. too bad I wasn't into detecting at that time.

Never have I seen anyone else detecting there, until yesterday

....a lady detecting the dry sand...no headphones...no boots...don't know what detector she was using...I was busy far out in the low tide and didn't have the opportunity to approach her.

And another lady walking her dogs stopped and spoke briefly with me . She said that a few years ago, a detectorist on the beach told her he had found a diamond ring.
This lady said she was originally from Myrtle Beach, SC... I said "Oh, I would love to go down there and detect."

She said that 's all you see at Myrtle Beach are loads of detectorists.

Oh, and lots of dogs detecting for bones...digging up the sand :)
I have a pocket full of snack "bones " that I give to my canine friends...I know most of them by now.

OK..let me know
