I just bought a S&W 9mm for my wife and am looking for a 1911 .45 for myself. I know Vernon and Ray have Kimbers but I'm not looking to put that much

Some Kimbers can be had NEW for 700+- just depends options on them and thats not far from other 45's if you want Kimber.
Go to a few places and feel a few out and read some on the net,but good luck
Me I have a Norinco full size GI but not for carry ;)

Here is a link for you to check out most any gun ever made ,I love this site

Remington 1911 model R1.45 cal, heavy gun, not for conceal carry but a very basic 45auto, very minimal jams, under $600.00 only modern feature on the gun is the white dot sights, like I said, a heavy gun, but it carries well on the belt in a holster.............

It wil be you best buy for the money.
They are built very well,to Military specs, and are a great platform for build up if decide to do so.
Or, thy are great shooters right out of the box.Mine stand up to my Colt Series 70 any day.
All 1911 parts are interchangable with the P.O.
Shop around and you will find a new one for $400-$500.( don't pay any more for one)
For that amount of money i wouldn't consider anything else.

I wasn't fully awake when i read and responded to this post.
I mistakenly wrote Para Ordnance instead of Auto Ordnance.
You will not go wrong with the Auto Ordnance.

was that the infed ammo was pushed too close to the ejecting brass case, which kept the case from getting through the ejector port, some cases were jammed back into the chamber, we tried three different mags (the para P10 uses a double stack 10 rd mag) and different ammo, to no avail, I dropped this like a hot potato and have never looked back.............

I wouldn't use one o' them to pound in my tomatoe stakes.
I rank them down there with the Llamas.
