I just wish Garrett's weren't so heavy....

I gave serious consideration to Garrett's lineup of detectors before going for the lighter F75 LTD, but the weight of Garrett's top of the line detectors concerned me. I own an Explorer SE, which I feel is heavy, and it's only 3.7 pounds without the battery. I'm not sure how much heavier it is with the battery. Still, it couldn't be as heavy as the GTI2500. 4.6 pounds is even heavier than the Sovereign GT.

Has the weight of these detectors ever given you problems?

GTI2500 = 4.6 pounds
GTI1500 = 4.0 pounds
GTP1350 = 4.0 pounds

I dont mind...they feel solid to me. Built like a tank, Whites detectors feel cheep to me but there performance makes up fot it.

I really didnt notice any difference as
far as weight.... Ill stick with my Garrett

I swing the 1350 and weight has never been an issue for me. You can hip mount the battery pack witch takes an entire pound off the tector.

#1-Hunt often, and/or work out. Building up a good muscular profile and endurance for any machine will surely lighten up the load.

#1-Use good body mechanics....don't extend the lower rod to it's maximum length and keep the machine tucked in to your body as close as possible when hunting.

#3- Take the battery pack out and wear it on your waist if the machine is too heavy for you.


I can hunt all day with the GTI 2500. Garretts are built TOUGH! You don't hear of the plastics snapping and breaking on Garretts. A little extra weight is a small price to pay for having a great machine like the GTI 2500. No other manufacturer makes a detector with the ability to size an object.

I'm 61 years old and can swing a Garrett all day. No weight problem here. And no issues with Garrett's.

Well, the only Garrett that you mention that I use is the GTI 2500. I don't have any problems with the weight, unless I'm using it with one of the larger searchcoils. Then, I use a bungee/chest harness(which I kind of like to use anyway because you don't have to worry about setting your detector in the dirt/mud. Just let it go and it kind of "floats" there) I do have an old GTAx 1250, which is the same as the 1500 and 1350 without the sizing/profiling. It's pleasant to use. No weight issues. Just like John and Oakman say, you can remove the battery pack and hipmount it. That takes one pound off of the weight of the detector. Yeah, that SE is four pounds with the battery pack. I've got an old XS that I haven't swung in ages which is a bit heavier. It's got that 15" WOT and I would definitely need to use the bungee whenever I swung it around By the way, that Sovereign GT is actually 4.8 lbs. That's with the 10" search coil. Now, that F-75 is a great machine with fabulous ergonomics. Me and a buddy traded detectors for a few days and I played with that F-75. It's fun to swing, but to be honest, I was afriad that I was going to break the thing. I'm not saying that it's poorly made. It's a great machine. It's just that it seemed really flimsy to me.
