I Love My 3kHz Coil!

This coil in my soil is a serious coin and silver killer!

I've been scouting out new places, and everywhere that conditions allow it, I've been using the 3kHz in All Metal. This last week I've found a spot that is producing some really good stuff. And the 3kHz is sniffing it out at amaizing depths, including a Merc @ nearly 12". Oldest coin there so far was a '39 Wheat. And I've only casually covered a 40'x80' area....and there are acres.

Congrats. on the great finds and I could not have said it any better about your praise for the 3Khz. Coil. Like you, I am totally amazed at the depth and how it finds good copper and silver in spots that I have hunted many times before.
I scored three Indians in two days with it.

I totally agree, Randy has really wanted one, and we have hammered this point for quite a while to get a 3kHz DD made with no luck from Minelab.

Congrats and welcome to the 3KHz silver sucker club! I am amazed at the stuff i'm snaggin' outta the ground with mine in places that i have detected with the stock coil on the 705 and my Xterra 30..It is definitly my main coil of choice when i am in the woods! Happy Hunting! Emmett

Went to a park today that I've been to with the 3kHz, but had decided that a DD coil would be a distinct advantage. Lat time that Iwas there with the 3kHz, I found a few Wheats and a '59 George. This time I put the 7.5kHz on, dug two hands full of rusty BTs, a few copper Mems, and a '48 Rosie.
The difference etween the two hunts was astounding. So much more junk dug "just to be sure". So, when I got home, I stuck my nose back into Randy's book. Toward the end, in the Q & A with Dr. Laurence, I found an illustration and an explanation that made it all clear. The explanation has to do with the separation between TID "bins" when changing frequencies.

It also (to me) illustrates the need for a DD coil that is 3kHz.

High freq = a larger notch segment at the lower notch segments, allowing for a better lock on Gold, Nickels, and pull tabs. Low freq = a larger notch at the top end of the scale, allowing for better lock on Silver. The end result, to some degree, is a deeper lock on targeted materials by choice of coils. MOL. This does not address how any coil handles in various soil conditions, just the notch width.

This is how I read it, in my practical application mindset.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I will have to go and re read the ebook

That's pretty much it as I see it too. MineLab has taken care of the nugget hunters, but not the coin shooters.
Don't get me wrong, MineLab makes w/o doubt the best detectors, and I love my 705, and with the coils that I have I do OK, but......

I may well get an Explorer SE, or an E-Trac someday, but if I had an alternative to spending over a grand to get a machine with a 3kHz DD, I'd be much happier.

When I got my SE I picked it up used for $700 then picked up an 8" FBS. Slow I still prefer the Exterra

I recently inquired through MineLab's website about any future plans to release a 3kHz DD coil. After getting a standard response letter referring me to kellyco for assistance locating the coil, I had a contact name to direct further inquiry to. This is the answer that I just received.

Maybe if we organize a 3kHz coil request campaign, we can convince them that there is a sufficient market for them to pursue.

You started this thread and seem very happy with the 3kHz coil and I would like to get one as a second coil for silver and copper in local parks etc but when i looked it up at minelab it said not recommended for highly mineralized soils which is what I have here in Arizona...... not sure where you live but have you had any soil like that by you that you can comment on?

I haven't hunted anywhere that would say is "highly" mineralized. Most places that I hunt, the biggest downfall of the 3kHz is it's only being available in a concentric configuration. I haven't found conditions yet that it didn't go as deep as any, and it locks on coins like no other. I must say however, that I've not hunted all of the available soil conditions that I have nearby.

One of the areas that I hope to hit soon is all sand, though different than AZ sand. I'll have all three frequency coils with me, and it will be interesting to see which works best.
