Just recently bought a xs and am having difficulty with all types of beeps,warps,bongs,etc..I can pick out the good ones but boy does it make alot of noise. Is this normal? Im a begineer with this type detector and am starting in quickmode, smartfind. Help im only finding stuff 4-5 inches and I know Im doing something wrong!!!

You are not doing anything wrong sounds normal to me. PRACTICE and more hours on the machine and it will start getting better.
everybody goes through this stage.I have been there

This is all normal. I just started with my XS about two years ago. I can definitely relate to what you're dealing with now. Its hard to tell what sound is what at first but you'll get it eventually. Spend some time waving coins in front of the coil while its in the air and try to remember the sound it makes. Do that before each time you go out in the field. Soon you'll be able to tell what the coin is while blindfolded.
Oh one other thing, don't pay attention to that screen. I've learned that it is inconsistant. It does help reinforce your decision when you think you hear a certain coin and want to be sure before digging, but make your choice on sound first, then the screen. For instance: the cursor is usually in the top right corner or just below the top right corner when your target is silver. Sometimes though it will jump around a lot; especially when there's another target nearby. Pennies often come up where the "screwcaps" are, so you cant exactly discriminate the screwcaps without doing the pennies too. Nickels come up where the pulltabs are; same deal there. Jewelry can pop up anywhere, but tends to show up in the middle near the bottom of the screen. Then again, so does foil!!
So my point is this: listen to the sounds ahead of time, check the forums for some good starting settings, and dont even look at the screen for the first week you use the device. Learn the screen after you learn the sounds. Just my opinion; it worked for me. The settings you choose will change the way each coin sounds, so keep that in mind too.
There are a lot of great people on this forum and they will always help you if you ask.

thanks man was starting to wonder if the machine was getting the best of me

If you know anyone around your area that has more experience with the XS or EX II hook up and they can show you in person some pointers. I had this opportunity when I was learning and can't believe what I learned. Like the sound of a deepie...hard to explain in words. GOOD LUCK and keep swinging it will come around.
