ok guys and gals as some of you know ive been mainly a beach hunter with my excalibur 2 1000 and ive done very very well with this machine,but im in ohio back home now and i wanna do some hunting around here,what would be the best detector one would use for around here high in clay soil and rocks at times??im looking forward to your responses.

The Excal is so close to the Sovereign you would have a head start with this detector on land.

thanks for advise but why would i want a meter??and why would i want s-1 probe? what do i gain by having these?im thinking for monies this machine will do what im looking for,just looking for input before i buy??what else would i consider and why? like coils?headphones?amps? do or dont i need??

I use a Sovereign in the dirt. I also use it on the beach in the sand wet and dry. It would make a nice back up to your Excal. And if your wife ever gets into the hobby she would have a killer machine on the beach. I have a meter installed in my speaker hole. (Done by Joe Patrick). I use the meter to pick through the trash. I always hunt in zero disc. I am just in disc to kill the iron. Just like the Excal. The Sovereign is deep. It can hunt in any soil. And you can hip mount it. Hip mounting is the only way I hunt with mine. With the meter mod I actually have to if I want to see it. So I use the Garrett pin pointer. A great little unit.

Jon,unless you hip mount the box meter is useless.The in line meter will give you extra depth on land,maybe a couple of inches.The meter will help you lock on a A target with a wiggle or enable you to see climbing numbers.The S-1 probe is very accurate and will save time and extra work digging.

John,another advantage over the Excal with the Sovereign you can make an easy change of search coils and headphones.Coils that work best, save your money and time, the Tornado 1000 and 800.The 800 coil has better separation than the other small coils and a lot more depth.I use Jolly Rogers and like these for comfort and quality.These headphones are loud enough for me plus no ringing in the ears after the hunt.

OK back to the sovereign,I'm just thinking of a back up machine since Ive still not gotten mine back from las Vegas,i thought the sovereign would be a good machine but i don't know that much about it,i have so many questions about it.as i asked above about the meter,what head sets,and what coil is best,but the hip mount Ive got more questions,OK does this machine give tones like the excal? Ive been told its similar machine?OK i understand meter,but how does just adding a meter to the circuit give you more depth?i understand more accuracy?now hip mounting this machine has what benefits over a chest mount assy??just a few of my questions here hope you don't mind?i still gotta post my pics from myrtle beach still,ill try to later on,but I'm wanting to get out to hunt before weather gets too bad up here and ground is frozen,

Are there actually detectors out there without meters?,,or you refering to a different kind of meter???

Yea,a few detectors are still being sold without meters,Whites TDI,Tesoro Tejon,Minelab Sovereign GT, Excal,CZ-21 and Minelab GPX are just a few.These units without a meter though will be hard-pressed to compete with a metered Famous Trails model.
