I use the numerical display on the ATPRO to.....

determine what I should dig most of the time, since my hearing is not what it used to be. So at what numbers should I dig targets at 50 on up to 90. What else should I use to determine what to dig. Like I said my hearing sucks pretty much. Most of what I dig around the 50 range is mostly pull tabs or Aluminum.

I find nickels around 50-53 and I found a cheap silver ring at 50. I don't dig anything from 60 - 70 but than again I am new to MD and to the AT Pro.

70 to 80's seem to be where most silver and copper coins ring in at (no pun intended) Gold can show up just about anywhere. Don't worry about digging too much junk. Those who dig the most junk get the most extraordinary finds.

Below is a chart which will also help you with your VDI numbers.

Hey Tom.....the gold rings that I have found have been "53" on the meter . the meter on the ATP is pretty darn accurate compared to other units. Good luck

I have dug up a men's 14k wedding ring at a solid repeatable 60 from all angles.

The 53 number comes up a lot for many different items, good and bad.

What I have learned is to dig the 53's when coupled with a few higher numbers and not dig if the 53 is coupled with lower numbers because they have always been junk for me.

Intresting how much different guys perception differs.....my 53's are usually gold or nickels

I guess the best advice is get out in the feild and learn during your own observation. good luck

Gentle People:

Just when you think you have it figured out :rage:, the ONLY way to know for sure is to Dig 'em all. I've had solid 53 nickels, nickels showing pairs of VDI numbers 53-52, nickels showing triple VDI numbers, 51-52-53, solid 53 pulltabs, gold has been from 47-80 and 53 is definitely in that range.

Thats all I have to say about that.......

A solid 53 I will always dig.

Yep, a nickel is almost always a solid 53.

But it can be small squared pull tad or a 14k gold ring or some other misc. junk.

For me after checking the target from all angles if i see any #,'s in the high 40's or lower mixed in with a 53 it is junk.

53 with some higher #'s mean dig.

I'm sorry but after 4 hours of swinging and 100% of certain visual ID's coming up junk I pass.

I do start out digging most everything except iron and extreme jumpy and large size targets.

But once I see what the site is giving up I can then determine what to dig and what not to dig.

I might miss something, but it gives me more time to find higher confidence targets.
