I want to upgrade

This may seem like a strange post, but here I am coveting all of those juicy Fisher metal detectors. I am 78 years old. Getting on my knees and digging up goodies is fun, but next to impossible to get back off of the ground. Arthritis does that to you. Digging on my knees hurts too much.

I have been physically forced to do my beloved searching on fresh water beaches, shallow waters up to the waist and tot lots, where digging is not permitted. It is still wonderful fun and will hate the day I cannot do it anymore. Only people doing metal detecting can appreciate the adrenalin rush of certain beeping sounds.

I have Fisher F2 w/4”, 8” and NEL Hunter Coils and a Fisher 1280-X w/8”Coil. I enjoy both of them

I need a good reasons to upgrade. I want to buy better equipment, but I cannot justify it.

HELP !!!!!

Keep searching Folks,

Get knee pads buddy that's my remidy.

You are the only one that can justify up-grading your equipment. If you feel that you need a little more depth then your F 2 is giving you, or a few more mode options to choose from for varying hunting conditions that you don't have with your F 2, then those alone are justifications for up-grading. The main thing is to continue to have fun. If you think an up-grade of sorts would add a little more fun to your hunting life, go for it. Oh, I am 75 myself and I don't know a better hobby to keep us old duffers young. Good luck with whatever you swing. HH jim tn

I am only 67, but sometimes I just bend at the waist and do my digging, and other times I just set down kind of on one side.

I would go for the upgrade, you are worth it.

They make this liquid joint medicine that has helped a lot of people with your problem, if you haven't tried it that would be a good place to start. The old saying ( if you don't use it you'll lose it) comes into play. Keep digging as long as you can and go ahead and get the up grade you deserve it.

Go for the upgrade sometimes a new detector makes the hunt more interesting. I like trying different machines and have tried about everything out there. I enjoy going back to places where I have found old coins just to see if a new machine will find anything I missed. I started detecting around 1969 and back in those days I could come home with my pockets bulging with silver coins and it was fun. Now days the silver is getting scarce around here but I still love doing it and still get a thrill I see a silver coin down in the hole. I am 73 and am experiencing some aches and pains but I am not going to let it get me down.

I am in the same boat. I had an F2, F5 and others. I settled on the LRP because it was lighter, deeper and had the features I wanted that many high end detectors had. The F44 is about the same. I can swing it all day without fatigue. But the kneeling and getting back up is my only problem. I can do it for a short time before the body gives into the stress.

I find that I can last longer and not feel the stress as much if I rub some Blue Emu or Australian Dream on my joints before detecting. It's numbing agent allows for more freedom in my legs. In my case, I find that each year when I stop detecting for the winter, starting again in spring I can feel the lack of motion for a few moths. This year, through my Medicare plan, I have a Silver Sneakers card that allows free workout use at the local Gym/Spa. This I get through United Health on the Medicare Complete plan through them that costs nothing. I will try this year to ride the stationary bike or treadmill to keep myself a little more fit in my legs so that come spring, I'll be better prepared.

Good luck to you.

Hey, I know what you are going through! I'll be 79 in a few weeks and my back and knees give me a fit. I tried all kinds of knee pads and finally bought some $12.00 cheapies at Lowe's. They stay up and in the right position. Really cushions the knees. In sandy areas (lots of it down this way) I made an all plastic scoop for the found object then I run the detector over it. Really cut down on my bending . As one of my favorite politicians said (I only have a few) "Never Give Up". Oh yes, I've been detecting 46 years and simply can't go like I used to. Best of luck to you!

I am just the child of the bunch here at 61. Have you tried a wire frame camping stool ?

Or a rolling garden seat like https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=A0LEVvA9qW9WXmoATgQnnIlQ;_ylc=X1MDMTM1MTE5NTY4NwRfcgMyBGZyA3locy1tb3ppbGxhLTAwMgRncHJpZAMEbl9yc2x0AzAEbl9zdWdnAzAEb3JpZ2luA3NlYXJjaC55YWhvby5jb20EcG9zAzAEcHFzdHIDBHBxc3RybAMEcXN0cmwDMjMEcXVlcnkDZ2FyZGVuIHNlYXQgd2l0aCB3aGVlbHMEdF9zdG1wAzE0NTAxNTg0MDI-?p=garden+seat+with+wheels&fr2=sb-top-search&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-002
something low enough to dig in the ground and keep off the knees. The right length shovel can be used as a cane to help get back up.
Here is an interesting knee pad. it has handles to help you get back up, or you can flip it upside down and use it as a chair. http://www.betterseniorliving.com/item/FOLDING_GARDEN_SEAT/27836A?gdftrk=gdfV216767_a_7c4639_a_7c17624_a_7c27836A Would probably still need a pull cart to carry it around.

Thank you for all of the suggestions.

The kneeling/sitting garden chair sounds intriguing. Soft on the knees and I could use the chair legs to help me stand up. Dragging it along with me does sound like a challenge.

Thank goodness for beaches where I can do everything standing up. I have a nice long handled RTG scoop that works well for me.

I think I should upgrade.

Thank you for your suggestions. I love this web site.

I decided to upgrade. I found a F70 with the 11" DD for $355 and I went for it.

I live in NE Ohio so I need to have a few warm days to really work this monster. It seems to run at the edge of a nervous breakdown. Just my kind-of-guy.

Thank you again.

Learn to understand it and your jaw will drop often.
Search some of my posts, I have gotten way down into the quirks of the programming and learned to find great things in all kinds of situations.
Too jumpy...turn it down even below factory settings and still get deep.
60 is not 2/3 power, 50 is not half, 33 is not one third power, all of them are way higher than you think.
The power range is not designed like the volume on a stereo and that which drives some crazy when they think the sense works like other detectors and it makes too much noise at some sites even on factory settings.
There is a vid out there where a guy hits a deep coin, a nickel I believe at about 8" with his similar F75 and the sense was set on 1.
Here is one with another F75 hitting coins on really low sense in boost...that would be SL speed on the F70.
The F75/F70/T2's are all built on the same basic platform BTW.

The F70 sometimes goes on the market at fire sale prices, you got one, there is sometimes a big reason for that...not understanding how this thing actually works.
Learn the ins and outs and get real happy real quick.
