ID Edge GB

Hi,

The only thing I don't like about the Edge so far is that I find myself doubting the GB method quite often. I've tried GB'ing it with sensitivity as low as 1 on a wet fresh water beach and stil get a "BEEP BEEP BEEP" until lift it up.

Question: After balancing properly, does the ID Edge "track" and make GB adjustments as needed? I didn't see any mention of this in the manual. Without a threshold hum, it's hard to determine if it's balanced or not since "BEEP BEEP BEEP" means "it's already balanced" and also "cannot balance".

Perhaps someone could shed some light on this for me. So far, I've been having great results with this machine, looking forward to seeing how it performs on the beach drops this summer.

Thanks,
Steve

1. Go to All Metal mode and make sure ground is clear of targets.
2. Lower coil to 1 inch above sand/soil.
3. Push Auto button and hold it in while counting one elephant, two elephant, three elephant. With Auto button still held in, raise coil to about 8 inches and release Auto button. You should hear a single beep.
4. If you hear three beeps, find another clear/clean spot and repeat above steps to double check. If three beeps again then you are most likely already GB'd.

You can check whether you are GB'd. I do the following over a target free area; set sensitivity to 8, go to All Metal mode, bobb coil up and down and watch display/listen to see if the machine is reacting to the ground as a target. In my area sensitivity 8 is about as high as you can run it, even if GB'd correctly, 9's a little bit noisy & 10 is very noticeable.

If the Edge cannot adjust itself to a reasonable balance, it will issue three beeps and retain the last known good setting.

This will most likely not work on the wet/damp portion of any saltwater beach in Maine(black sand + salt). You can try it, but don't be surprised if you have to GB in the dry sand.

The Edge does not auto-track the ground.

Thanks Bill,

The fact that it retains it's last good setting is good to know. My only find in the wet salt sand so far is a large spoon. In the drier sand, I've pulled a wheatie from about 9 inches with sens on 6.

In Old Orchard, I put the sens on 9 one night and pulled a quarter from a hole that measured above my knee (I'm 5' 10"). The whole time I thought I was digging a pepsi can. I was quite impressed to say the least. :)

and Old Orchard is a good place to use it when the storms stir some of that iron from the old steel piers.

wading in my fresh water lakes. Usually on the initial try in the water it will balance out with the sensitivity at 6. Just make sure that you are in water deep enough that the coil does not approach the surface on the lift. Unless the bottom condition changes drastically I almost always get the 4 beeps on subsequent retries. After balancing I turn the sensitivity up to 8 or 9. As you pointed out, regardless of whether you get one beep or four the Edge does very well.
