ID Edge spanking my Explorer 2 need help with settings

Hello everyone............. I detected for a couple of hours today and compared each signal between the two Edge vs...... Explorer. The Edge was set at 8 sensitivity 2 bars from max with up to foil notched out. The Explorer was set at 28 sensitivity and was rock stable with only nails disced. I found around 14 targets with the Explorer that registered in the coin range (none were coins they were medium sized nails) consistent high flutey tone. The Edge found all of these targets also but the sounds were low to high and numbers were all over the place. These targets were about 6-8 inches deep. I also found several targets that the Explorer would not register on at all 2 of these targets were coins but I could hear the threshold go silent on the Explorer so I knew there was iron nearby but the Edge found the coins. I had the 8in..coil on the Explorer and the 8 in. on the Fisher. Which the Explorer coil is actually smaller by about an inch around 7 1/4. Today the Edge impressed me but the Explorer let me down. I need some settings to help id better cause I prefer the Explorer sounds. Anyone else ever compare these two units.. Need help in Carolina.

sounds like you had it in conductive sounds.....try ferrous sounds.....tell us what your settings are....that would help......

Hey Mattockman,

I did have it in Conductive sounds because the place was trashed with nails and the constant high tones for the ferrous nails was driving me crazy. I thought in conductive sounds nails were supposed to be a low tone. My sensitivity was 28 and iron mask -12. I had nails disced out but they still made high flutey tones. This was only my 4th time out with the Explorer and I have used Fisher detectors for years. I love the sounds but I need the settings to get the most out of it. Anyway I'm just trying to learn this detector and need some help.

I like ferrous tones with max variablility and a wide open screen in ANY place frequented by people. I also put my gain at 7 so the deeper ones sound deeper. I haven't used the edge or the 3D... but I think I need to :)

AM mode / FE tones. All the way with the EX

Hey Chris,

I appreciate the tidbit about the ferrous sounds. For some reason I forgot that nails sounded with a high tone in conductive sounds but everything els has a different tone. I'll open it up to a clear screen tommorrow and try ferrous sounds with variability at 7. Thanks king, Chris and mattockman.
:beers:

I've used the Excel, Edge and Coinstrike. The Explorer ll is in different category performance wise with these units.I would lower the sensitivity to 20 and you may want to use the stock 10.5 coil.

I like my gain at 8 to 9 depending and no disc at all w/ ferrous tones.
Also use manual sensitivity, sometimes in trash less is more sensitivity wise.

Also you will want to check the signal from 2 sides should you be uncertain. Often nails have a higher pitched sound then silver, not fluty as they say.
Check from 2 directions and it should be easier to say if it is a nail or not.:detecting:

set variability as high as possible, I think that is 10 if memory does serve me right.

10.5" coil is the way to go except for the most trashy sites.

Also use deep recovery and go real slow.. It will give you more accurate ID, but if it is really trashy then also try fast.

Hope it helps,
Eu

My first detector was a Fisher ID Excel, which is similar to the edge and where I hunt that machine could not produce a fraction of good coin finds my old used XS can pull out of trashy sites.I think it would be a great help to you hunt with an seasoned Explorer user to give you some insights on the machine. Before I got my explorer,I regularly hunted with explorer uses and I was pretty familiar with them, and when I got mine, these guys where a great help to my learning.Good luck and don't give up!

Go to this site and read it all...tips are exactly how I hunt and swear by them......Charles and I somehow hunt very similar, I came up with the same conclusions before I even read his web site....and even learned a few diff. tidbits that he shares.....Awsome info and wish you luck....hopefully you have a good set of headphones and also have set up(airtest) your variability, limits, and threshhold tone settings with all the diff. coins you have to get your ears the best opportunity to hear the diff. between them....then go out and hunt.

ANybody that wants the site I have it zipped. it's a little over 6MB. I copied the site with WinHTTrack website copier program. I did this with the goldenolde site some months back too.

of those pages you can get a freeware program called BullZip-PDF-Printer which converts anything printable to PDF and allows you to save the file as a PDF.

Here is the link - from a safe website (snapfiles.com)

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/BullZip-PDF-Printer.html

I saved Charles' tips this way - it is an exact image of his pages in PDF and can be read with any PDF reader such as Adobe PDF reader.

BullZip PDF Printer is a virtual printer driver that enables you to convert any printable document or image to PDF format. It works with all applications that offer a Print option, simple select the newly added BullZip PDF Printer instead of your regular printer, and the document will be converted and saved as PDF file. In addition to standard conversions, the program allows you to add custom watermarks, merge PDF files, and protect your PDF document. More features than most other free tools. Free for personal and commercial use.

His tips and settings helped me when I got my Explorer II. Started finding older coins and deeper as well. Thank you Charles for your tips,

Thanks everyone for the great information. I copied the settings and tips from the link provided. Now all I gotta do is use it.

I think--I haven't tested the files yet--I grabbed them all today via the Firefox plugin called something like DownThemAll.

Wish you were still posting there, Charles. Never saw an update after you were going to do more beach testing.

Thanks, I'm just taking a break from detecting while I'm out on the west coast spending time with family. This time next year I'm likely to re-invade the south Jersey shore and get back to work on that beach gold and silver. Imagine the pent up detecting energy I'll unleash! :D
