ID EXCEL locating nickles

The weather in Michigan is finally good enough to do some metal detecting. The park I searched has a lot of thrash, and a lot of frozen ground. I didn't find any silver coins ,but found four wheat pennies,a large silver ring, and a lot of the coins in the sixties. My problem is out of the twenty coins I've found there is no nickles. I'm still learning how to use this detector. Is there anyway to increase my ability to find nickles? I found coins at depths of 6-7 inches. This detector does work much better in the field than expected. The Id Excel doesn't air test that well when compared to other detectors, and probably lost some sales. Ron

The new Fishers do not air test well. But I have never found anything in the air! But man, they get it done in the ground where it counts! I think you are just going to have to train yourself to listen for that low tone. That's how I hunt. I listen for foil and pulltabs. Anything that comes in above that is just a bonus. Watch for the "10" - "12" reading on the display. You can bet the nickels are there, and the Excel WILL tell you they are there. You just have to weed through the junk. Also, be careful about what you consider "junk". I find a lot of gold that shows up as foil/nickel/pulltab. Here is a piece of 18K "foil"

I haven't even been able to check my dirt yet, here in southern MI. My family's been sick for over a week. We're just now starting to get better, but my other half and her Mom aren't 100% yet. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get back into hunting, but it should happen either this week or next. I was able to out a few times in Jan. and early Feb., when I least expected to be able to hunt.

Of course, what's really bad, is that I'm getting just as addicted to researching as I am to actually hunting.

Tony thanks for the advice.I have only used my Id Excel a couple of times. The detector seems to be user friendly in thrash.I know this park is old and silver coins are there I'll just have to wade through more thrash. Ron

Just follow this link, I was picking Jeffs out of clad & silver drops. I left fistful's of coins in ground/sand. It WILL find nickers, no problem.

and I literally mean a few. After I got the morning chores done, I was about to "sneak out" before I had to go to work. Well, my other half took her mother someplace for lunch. I figured, Ok, they'll be gone about 15 minutes, then I can take off. WRONG! She left her mother at a nearby diner for an hour! By the time she came home, so that I could leave, I had maybe an extra 15 - 20 minutes. So much for my day. Maybe tomorrow.
