ID Excel or CZ-70 Pro

Mike in Ky

New member
If you had to choose between the 2, which would you prefer for coin hunting? Also how is the ID Excel around old homesites where there is alot of small nails? If you could, please explain why. I've got a CZ-70 Pro but I'm thinking about getting a ID Excel for the weight difference. I do know one thing, my CZ-70 Pro absolutely loves nickels. I dug 27 nickels Saturday at a local high school along with 5 dimes, 11 quarters and 9 pennies.

I'm not knocking the Excel in any shape form or fashion, but I just didn't care much for it. Now for the money, its probably one of the best machines for its class. I don't think you will get the nickels with the Excel that you do with the 70. CZ's love nickels.

The CZ70 is my all-time favorite machine next to the Coinstrike. But, the ID Excel is a great unit from what I have read on the forums and what little testing I did with one, but I just didn't particularly care for it myself, but thats no reflection on the machine whar so ever. A matter of preference just like some like the Coinstrike & some don't.Its not the fault of the machine, mainly the fault of the individual who bought it and not wanting to devote the time to learn it. Which could also be said for me and the ID excel.

I'm also thinking about trying the ID Excel for some relic hunting and see how it does. I'm going to take it to the field where I have found 88 flat buttons so far. There is still alot left there to find.

Hi Mike,

The Excel does just fine in iron. I have been playing around comparing it to the Cibola with both the stock and 5.75" coils. So far the Excel with the 8" is seeing everything and its much easier to ID iron and work around it. Hunted one really nasty spot over the weekend starting out with the Cibola with the 5.75" coil and after about a half hour switched to the Excel. What a difference, no more lifting the coil to ID big iron (the overload indication is just right IMO) and it saw more stuff next to the iron, even lower conductors in the nickel range and below. Not saying the Cibola isn't a keeper, it does go deep in my ground even with the 5.75 coil and has very good sensitivity to small stuff but the Excel flat makes hunting the really nasty stuff almost easy compared to anything else I have used.

Everyone knows I am a CZ nut and would use the 5 inch coil on it around old homesites in other areas a CZ just is a deeper machine...and old coins in my area are usually from 6 to 12 inches deep....Yep have used the ID excel and was a much faster unit and handled iron better. I guess thats why if one can afford it have several machines in their stable...

you were thinning out the herd Frank.

Know what? I have found that having several good mid priced machines can be a lot more fun and productive than trying out all the top end "high performance models". Just like with cars there arent' many places you can really open em up anyway. I'll qualify that by saying due to living in a small town rural area there aren't any of older parks here like Dan Pa and others hunt where coins are deep and it takes machines like the CZ and Ex to get down there. Around here whats left is the stuff co-located with iron or other trash and recovery/seperation abilities take precedent over raw depth.

Tom, thanks for the info. That's my main concern. One field I hunt is very nasty with small iron. I've found 88 flat buttons there so far along with alot of other stuff but you do have to pick alot of it out of the iron. There is still so much stuff there to find. I just wanted to try another detector to work in and around the old square nails and such. I guess I'll find out. I'll have a new ID Excel on Friday. I've got the CZ-70 Pro and it is a great machine. Most of the buttons I found there, were found with a Cortes or Bandido II uMax. I just decided to go back to Fisher for awhile. Ya'll wish me luck.

Mike

how well the Excel handles those square nails. There are very few truly older sites in my neck of the woods and I don't run into those very often. Either that or the Excel ignores them.

Seriously, I have heard from guys that hunt older sites out east that the Excel does very well. Sometimes I wonder which is the worst to hunt, the newer iron +-100 years old, or the older 150+ year iron sites.

Tom

One for land and one for water...Certainly good reading...Many Fisher dealers should have them in stock and some online bookstores also. I would contact a few dealers and you should find them...

Tom, most of the things I'm finding at this one site is dated to late 1700's to mid 1800's. Some very old stuff and I love it. Good thing is , I'm the only one that has hunted it at all. I guess I'll be the only one to hunt it. I've invited a friend of mine to go but he hasn't been able to yet. I will let you know how the ID Excel does.

Mike

if Fisher or Sun Ray came thru with a smaller coil for the ID Excel. Based on what it does with the stock coil a 5 or 6" would be a killer in trash!

Tom

I love diggin that "old" stuff too.

Tom

I got the ID Excel today and got to try it for a short time. I already really like it. It does separate the good stuff from the trash. I did find a couple of silver coins today around an old homesite I thought I had hunted out. The Merc. dime and Liberty Quarter had both been masked by nails before. I'm going to put a Sunray Probe on it very soon. I would recommend the ID Excel to new or seasoned hunters alike.

Mike

I do know that SunRay is working on a 5" coil for the ID Excel. I got that from Ralph today. I told him I wanted one as soon as they are finished.
