ID Help on old medal?

HI,
I posted this on the relics forum a few weeks ago. I'm still trying to figure out what it is. It gave a signal of copper and looks like copper. It is about as thick as a modern day penny. It has the bust of a man on the front with some lettering below the bust that I can not read. The last there letters appear to be 'ton'. The back has the United States Eagle on it along with the ribbon over head that has the Great Seal of the United States 'E pluribus unum' inscribed in it. There is a small hole in one corner where it may have been attached to something. I have no idea on this one. The site also produced buttons from 1700's thru the 1800's. Any ideas? Thanks for looking.

I hope this helps, I found something similar. (maybe dating the piece)

With the eagle holding the arrows. The 36 stars might be a clue as to the time frame. When was the united states only 36 states?? Possibly the War of 1812. When was the French Indian War? The big nosed ugly guy would have to be George Washington or Stalin, but giving the American motif, I would agree with Bob on George Washington. I just dug a civil war token today dated 1863 that was so rough I couldn't read enough to identify it. I ended up putting it under a piece of paper and doing a charcoal rub which revealed the words on the back "Our Cart" which actually was "Our Card" in the center of a wreath. The front had a head like a 1792 coin with 13 stars and a word at the top that was unidentifiable, The word is actually "union". I found the identity in Russell Ralua's book of US tokens, page 439 for the front Die #1105 or 1106 and the back on page 528 Die #274. That took some serious detective work, let me tell you. At first I thought I had found a 1792 coin with a major minting error:rofl: My first civil war token:thumbup:. Good luck at identifying yours. Try the charcoal or pencil rub (a colored pencil works best if you don't have charcoal), I was able to get details on the charcoal rub I couldn't see with my 10x/30x stereo microscope. Then try looking in a book of American uniform badges and buttons for a match. Good luck.

Thanks so much for all your replies. I have been searching every day in between work and other activities but have not found any concrete evidence as to what it is. The masons tag that magicman posted sure has the look and feel though. I have had others including myself think that it does look a lot like Teddy. I was wondering about Washington too but it does look like Teddy. If it is Washington related then perhaps it is a centennial tag somewhere around 1870's? I have Alberts button book and Tice but no books on tags and tokens. That is on my wish list. Thanks again and I will update my post if I find out just what it is. I'm open to any thoughts and ideas.

It seems to be Political in nature. I would check under Governors and other political figures in that area. There could have been an election at that time. You might find some pictures. Good Luck.

Someone on another forum was able to identify this. Congrats to go to the guess of Grover Cleveland! It is a political medalet for Grover Cleveland 1883.
