ID oddities

Here's some recent T2 park finds. A '46 Washington, 3 silver Roosevelt dimes ('59-'64) and a couple wheats. One of the wheats is a 1909 (not VDB or S).

Odd: The ID on one of the silver dimes bounced between a tab and a zinc (?) but it was only about 6 inches down and was lying flat as far as I could tell. I checked for other nearby metal but found nothing. Never saw that before. Dimes have always read as dimes on the T2 even when pretty deep.

And, one of the wheats IDed in the high zinc range (78-79) and was not deep (about 5"). I've noticed this before with wheat cents on the T2. They sometimes read a little lower than newer copper cents. Maybe because they've been in the ground longer and have lost some copper to oxidation?

Anyway, you just never know until you dig it up.

WTG Eddie with the old coins,

Some wheat back pennies do read lower, Depending on the year some will vary, Can't remember which years they are off the back of my head but they do have a variance.

And the silver dime reading lower, Many times if the dime is worn or chopped it will read lower in the zinc area. Even seated or half 1/2 dimes read lower.

Congrats Eddie, You and the T-2 are a team!

This is one of the things I had notice with my T-2 when I had it that as the coin gets deeper the ID reads lower. Maybe it was just mine as other don't seem to notice this, but I know that walking lib I found that was deep read in the pull tab to zinc penny range, the tone read lower too in the Db mode I was in, but it sounded real weak and repeatable so I dug it. Maybe there was something beside it too I didn't notice, but I had other coins do this too and learned to dig all deep signals when I had it. The first 6 inches was pretty much good, but at 8 inches the ID and tone were off if I remember right.

Thanks. I know that some IH cents also read as zinc due to different composition but I've never found one.

With the Minelabs and I know the MXT the IH pennies the pennies in the teen and the new zinc pennies that have been made since late 1982 will read the same on the ID. I think there is one in the 40s also that will read this low too.
If I don't want to dig all the new zinc pennies I just dig the weaker sounding one, but there is time when a IH may not be that deep too and unless you dig them all you may miss one or 2. With the T-2 I dug all positive signals that were deeper and used the tone and display on the one that were not deep.
