If anyone is interested in a Mozambique coin, I found one yesterday..and here are pics..

It didn't have the sound of a quarter..but it had the size and shape of a quarter so I was fooled at first as to its identity.

But as I began cleaning it ( no easy task on this one) I could see partial images; did some research ; discovered that this coin is a :

"REPUBLICA POPULAR DE MOCAMBIQUE" 5 METICAIS (28.79 METICAIS =1.15 DOLLARS)

Metallic content : Aluminum

1980 was the first year of issuance of this coin; it replaced the "Escudo", the currency of Portugal.

And I refreshed my history by reading that Mozambique declared its independence from Portugal in 1975

Still cleaning this coin...will repost a "cleaned and shined" photo later.

I love collecting foreign coins..
