My buddy and I have been hunting a new field that we decided to check out earlier this week on our way to another spot. Upon just getting started on this new area my hunting buddy Chris hit a silver Washington pretty near right off. Of course, that got us going. Well, I should say, it got him going. After about an hour and nothing but clad, Memorials and the occasional wheat back, he ventured off across the road and started hunting a curb strip. It wasn't long when I happened to see him doing the HAPPY DANCE and started walking towards me holding something in his hand. I asked him what he had found and he said a 1866 Seated quarter. Wow, I said, good for you. Yeah, I did mean it, I think. He handed it to me and I noticed a small loop on the top that a small chain would have gone through and something about the coin just didn't look right. The lettering appeared to be, well, not english. As it turned out it was a 1866 type 1 90 % silver Seated Peruvian coin that is listed as rare. And to top that mornings hunt off, he shortly thereafter un-earthed a 1901 Barber dime.
The next day I finally got on the silver board from that field, well, 30 % anyway, with a 1943p War nickel. Yesterday I finally got a full fledged 90 per center recovering a 1942 Merc. The 1912 Barber dime I got a few days ago off a spot nearby this most recent spot.
Now to the subject line, LUCK and Mud. Mudpuppy and I had been in touch as he was making a business run down into the deep south and on his way back was planning on staying in the Memphis area. I gave him the names of a couple of motels just within a few minutes from my place and we made plans to meet this morning for breakfast before he headed up to Nashville. I walked into the lobby of his motel this morning at 5:30a and spotted a near shaved headed guy looking at google earth on the motels computer. Knew right off that had to be the infamous Mudpuppy. And as it turned out, he is pretty near exactly what his posts imply. One great fellow. Over breakfast we exchanged war stories for near a couple of hours and then from the back of our vehicles we looked at some of each others gold and silver jewelry finds. We then parted ways vowing to try and hook up for a good hunting outing somewhere between Tennessee and Michigan in the not to distant future. While he was working, driving down the interstate to see clients, I was playing. And my encounter with John brought me luck.
Yep, I dug 3 silver coins this morning along with a couple bucks in clad and cents, 4 wheats, all 40's decade, and a green disc with some lettering along the rim. It is a hair larger then a nickel and a hair smaller then a quarter. It is getting a vinegar soak currently. What ever it is, it is pretty toasted. This new field is developing into a pretty decent spot. And the new version 2 F 75 is purring right along. HH jim tn
