If you hunt in iron mask wide open then what would be the purpose of a thresh hold?

I finally got my brain used to doing it, iron mask wide open, and I realized now my threshold doesn't really have a purpose anymore because they're are no nulls anymore. If that is the case, couldn't you turn it down to nothing and really start hearing the faint faint ones??? The weather turned brutal here before I could test this out. Has anyone tried it??

i'm not an expert but i would think that without the threshold the faint targets would be completely lost. with the threshold you will hear a very slight change in tone and nothing in silent search.

I ran the explorer for an entire year without a threshold. I would move it on and off on weak signals and I really could not see or hear any difference. My hunting buddy has not used any threshold for at least 4 years and the both of us have no shortage of deep faint signals and neither of us come anywhere near running the iron mask wide open. The only reason I run any threshold now is when I put the X-1 probe in the hole, when it gets near rusted iron the threshold nulls out but will still pick up the coins in the hole with the rust. Many of the members in the club we belong to run that iron mask close to wide open and don't find near what we do. I love to hunt the spots where they have been. They take out plenty of trash and leave lots of really good coins which I am very pleased to give a good home. Good hunting everyone and Merry Christmas. Jim P. Rockford, Illinois.
