If you switched for a DFX to an Xterra 70 or 705

Hi Really thinking hard of switching from my DFX to something else. Have been thinking about an Etrac or an Explorer SE but have always had a warm spot in my heart for the Xterra. I was wondering if there are any former DFX or V3 folks that have moved to the Xterra. If so what do you like about the Xterra 705 and what do you miss about your DFX if anything.

Thanks for the input it will be very much appreciated

I am new to the x-terra705, but I've also kept my dfx. I really enjoy the "no-brainer" controls of the 705 in comparison to the dfx. The 705 doesn't have all the menu's and diff. variables to fumble with.

Probably forgetting a few, but here are some likes of the 705:
>light weight
> easy backlight
>diff frequency coils are a huge benefit most other detectors can't compare to
>easy discrimination method
>VERY fast target separation in comparison to dfx.(with dd HF coil)
>multi-tones are much easier to listen to than the dfx.
>only 4-AA batteries (1st set lasted me about 30hrs with some light use of the backlight)
>much more stable than the dfx around EMI
>has optional settings for tones*(in case the multi-tones drive you nuts)
>VERY turn on and go (especially with the auto tracking)
>menu design is wonderfully easy once you know how to work it. (I like that I can keep my main settings the same, while switching to a diff. program pattern.)
>picks up on necklaces that my dfx won't even recognize. (very sensitive to small items with the HF dd)

These are a few reasons I won't get rid of my dfx:
>I feel it has a more accurate VDI number display
>With several of my coils I can get amazingly deep
>I love the trigger pinpoint (and the accuracy it provides with certain coils)
>also has frequency change options
>VERY solid quality built machine
>I like that it doesn't tip over while the headphones are attached. (705 needed some altering to accomplish this)
>many coil options
>great name brand with solid service reputation
>I like the threshhold hum much better on the dfx. (Probably just what I'm use to.)
>If I want to build a crazy HOT running program, I can! (I've found a few keepers that way, but most the time the falsing drives me crazy, so I end up cutting it back a bit.)

Good luck in your decision! IMHO, you can't go wrong in purchasing this machine. Only question is, whether or not you have to give up a machine you may want back later.
Personally, I'm glad I gave myself the option.

Thanks for input, I find the tones on the DFX kind of annoying wish I could make it a three or four tone machine. Grunt for iron low tone for low conductors medium for the middle conductors and high for that sweet silver. You kind of have it but there is a lot of noise between some love it I am not one of them though I am used to it Weight is another issue and I see no way around that other then lifting weights - Naaa!

Thanks

Can't speak for the DFX but have used XLT and other Whites machines. I love my 705 and it is rapidly becoming my favorite machine ever. I have RA so the lightweight comfort and balance allows me to swing it all day without pain. It will hold it's own in depth, it is fast and has awesome features that you will actually use !! I don't think that you will be disappointed if you decide to make a change. I believe when a machine has too many settings you tend to overanalyze and waste precious time. The 705 is an easy setup and go machine that will give you enough data if you choose to use the dig or not dig method.

Very well stated! Like you, I enjoyed the variety of small coils. The 4 X 6 Shooter DD is a great coil for target separation. And the 5.3 Eclipse is amazingly deep for its size. With the wider range of TID numbers, the accuracy of target properties was excellent. My biggest "hangup" on the DFX was that to build what you called a "crazy HOT program, I soon realized that changing one or two controls had adverse affects on others. Sometimes it was tough to get it in sync with itself, creating more problems than if I had just left it alone. I am of the opinion that the simplicity of operating the X-TERRA gives me much more time actually detecting, compared to constantly tweaking the controls. Convinced that I was not giving up depth, separation or dependability, plus when you consider the weight, balance, choice of operating at any of three diffferent frequencies, quick response, multiple tone audio, tracking ground balance offset and a very easy to navigate menu..... well, those are some of the reasons I prefer my 705. I don't so much agree with you guys. Maybe it's because I am a lot older and have spent too many years with my DFX. I bought a 705 just because a friend did. It's lighter, it's as accurate as the dfx in as far as identification of targets but, I have put them side by side and ran over live buried targets and the dfx is only a bit more accurate. The dfx is a turn on and go machine compared to the 705 and is a lot quieter in various parks I hunt. Neither machine does well here in Washington state on the beach. Too much black sand for any machine. Where the dfx runs ahead is on rings. When the28, 38, 46, 48 pops up on the screen, it's 99 percent a ring. Where the 705 has a harder time identifying rings. I end up digging too many trash targets with it. Neither one is good on smaller pieces of gold jewelry. I walked over a small gold bracelet on top of the grass and both machines failed to recognize it. I did sell my 705 ( to a younger guy ) and he is delighted. I still have my DFX but did pick up an f 70 and I am surprised and embarrassed to admit it's better for me than either of my machines. It goes deeper, identifies targets well and is much lighter than my baby dfx. All I have to do is throw on an fx1 pin pointer to it and maybe a smaller dd coil and it very well could be my last machine I'll ever need. I was taught a long time ago. You buy the best machine you can and learn it back and forth, learn it so well, it becomes a part of you and that's all there is.The treasure will come. Good luck with what ever machine you pick.
