If you want a 3 khz 6in DD coil for the Xterra PUT YOUR NAME DOWN HERE

When are you going to ear bash those at Minelab ? --- It's time for them to step up to the plate and support the X-Terra 505 / 705 with some new coils. How can we (us that own one, and those that will in the future) make the most of the great features of this great detector with the limited coil choice. I think that the owners of the 70 / 705 have waited long enough and it's time someone made a stand to get things into motion. It's clear that there is a demand for new coils to make use of the 3 frequencies that these detectors have, but it seems that Minelab is not up to speed on this.

I've yet to see anyone from Minelab step forward with concrete news on how they are going to support and proceed in this matter with the end user of this much under-rated metal detector.

And while I'm in this rant mode, I'll also point out that the E-Trac is also lacking in coil selection, I'd like to see a 5 or 6 inch DD, and a 5x10 DD like the X-Terra has.

I look forward to yours and Minelab's reply in the not so distant future.

I've never found "ear-bashing" to be an effective tool for persuading someone to do something I was trying to get accomplished. I've found that making sound recommendations, supporting them with technical facts and accurate market demographics is the best way to persuade a company to make new products. That is why we have the 6-inch coils. That is why we have the 3 khz concentric coil. That is why we have the 5 X 10 Elliptcal coil. That is why we have the 10-5 inch DD coils. And that is why Minelab authorized Coiltek to make the All Terrain DD at 7.5 kHz. We started the X-TERRA with one coil. Today there are nine. So from my perspective, working with them instead of lecturing them has worked quite well. Maybe not as quickly as some would like. But it has evolved a long ways from where it started out. There have been a few designs that didn't meet the expectations of those who tested them. But the work continues............

As to your comment the coil selection is lacking on the E-TRAC........the E-TRAC has all those coil options you mentioned available, as well as many others. Of those you mentioned, my preference is the 5-inch Sun Ray Stealth coil, the 6-inch EXcelerator EQ2 coil and the 5 X 10 Coiltek Joey coil. I had the 6 X 8 butterfly but found the depth and separation of the EQ2 6-inch to be superior.

I'm calling poppycock on this one.

I still think It's only wishful thinking. I fail to see theoretically or practically, how a 6" 3khz DD will be of any benefit over the 6"MF concentric, and can't imagine even the slightest improvement on any given signal on any ground type.

6" is too small for the low 3khz, as the 15" is too large for the high frequency. Bad match. We have a great selection of approved coils already, that match frequency to size. I've got all those coils and guess which one I'm falling back on now, yep, stock. Took a long while to figure out that the 10.5 DD has no extra depth. Still like the all terrain though.

Bugger the European coils, As bad as the Chinese practise of lack of respect to copyright. Wouldn't mind betting the owners and users of those coils are talking them up just simply to justify purchase.

Poppycock

Minelab and Coiltek know the buisness. They lead in it. I bet they know that if they produce a 6"DD in 3khz, the first post or ten that appear on forums, stating that the money spent on the coil wasn't worth parting with because there is no noticeable difference between it and the 6"MF concentric, then they'll be stuck with a thousand coils sitting in boxes on wharehouse shelves.

Actually, I have to agree with a couple things you stated. It is very difficult to tune a smaller coil to the 3 kHz frequency. There is much more to designing a coil to transmit a specific frequency than simply changing out the chip.

Like you, I get more depth from my 9-inch concentric than I do the 10.5 inch DD. However, my soil is moderately mineralized, allowing for good performance out of a concentric.

I will disagree with your comments regarding the lower frequency not being of benefit...... granted, it may not detect any deeper than a MF or HF of the same size. But the lower frequency definitely provides more definition of higher conductive targets. Or, if you prefer to look at it conversely, it provides less definition of lower conductive targets, allowing those targets to provide a distinct "harmonic" audio response. (due to more narrow bin widths)

As far as an improvement in performance between the 6-inch DD and the 6-inch concentric.....I can only speak for the 3 or 4 coils that I've compared...... but in every instance, the DD coil separates targets more accurately.

Hi Randy.

That's the main problem, I think, in marrying a 6" DDcoil to 3khz. We would simply not see the slight separation that we do with the other two 6" coils.
The 3khz frequency would be simply to fat on a 6" DD to get any distinct harmonic response noticable enough to make a difference to the current 6"MF concentric.
I grew up on DD coils, only liked concentrics when the first XTerra range came out. As you know the XTerra's behave like no other VLF. We are only noticing slight differences between frequencies, unlike on other two or three frequency detectors.

Living/hunting where the soil is a bit more variable, often getting GB numbers in the single digits and teens with concentrics, I see a benefit in DD coils of any size. And I DO see a very noteable difference in frequency ability and depth.

History didn't begin the day that you were born, and soil conditions aren't the same everywhere as what you hunt in. Just because you see little if any difference in a certain coil where you are, does NOT mean that it will be the same elsewhere.

Are you sure you can see a "very noticable difference between frequency and depth with the XTerra's and their coils Longhair? Or is it only a slight difference?
I'm afraid old son, that if I do notice only slight differences between frequencies and coil size on the XTerra's in the many different soil types I detect in, in comparison to other detectors re- the different way they behave to our XTerra range, It DOES mean that they will be the same in any part of the world.

The XTerra behaves like an XTerra. They show, very noticably, much slighter differences than other units do, when coils and frequency's are changed.

What I notice more than the couple inches difference in depth, is the way that the lower frequency responds to the metals that I seek. I find it highly desireable, and preferable to the higher frequency coils.

And not knocking the MF coils at all! I split my time between the MF DD & LF coils. Any size LF DD will be greatly appreciated, as it will see as deep as that size coil can be reasonably expected to, will respond in the manner that I like, and it will deal with mineralization better than a same size concentric, as well as sorting through trash better than the CC.

Put me on the list I have all the other ones might as well have that too.
