In spring of 1999 a friend on mine approached me about detecting a water park that had been closed down and the lakes drained.
This place had been open to the public for over 30 years and had NEVER seen a metal detector inside the fenced 25 acre park.
I asked some specific questions before agreeing to hunt it like ...
Who owns it and what percentage we would get in return and could we get the agreement in writing ?
We met the new owner who was eager to get this done ASAP but managed to agree on what and how everything was to be divided.
We were all given metal lockers (like you see in a dressing room) and we supplied our own combination locks.
The owner also supplied 1 gallon plastic buckets that we wrote our names on and at the end of the day each bucket was put into our lockers until full.
We had separate buckets for gold and silver jewelry and another for coins.
This was quite an undertaking, it took 2 months of hard work, at 5 day's a week, 6-8 hours a day, just for the swimming areas alone with 4 guys swinging detectors.
And it was a hush, hush ordeal too, the guy kept the gates locked at all times when we were hunting and didn't want it discussed publicly either!
We even built large sifters and went through several tons of bottom sand before we felt we had gotten the majority of it all.
It was a LOT of work but well WORTH it

When everything was tallied up there was something like 30,000 pieces of jewelry taken from the place. Most was of low to average value but there was some very NICE pieces found too.
The owner got an even 1/2 of the take and the remaining half was divided among 3 others including myself as best as we could divide it and make everyone feel they were treated fairly.
It was literally divided up by Kt. denominations and weight including anything with a precious stone, this took another week by itself!
It was a bit overwhelming actually to see it all in one place.
And YES, the owner was taught how to use a detector and worked his butt off just like the rest of us did.
So, you see, things like this do happen on occasions, and when they do, you have to jump at the opportunity.
Did we dig our share of trash, absolutely, was it worth, hell YES and I would do it again in a heart beat if given the chance.
H.H.
