IM SOLD!

I 'm sold after reading all the good things you guys say about the ace 250.I'm a whites fan , a while back I was looking for a new detector, I was looking at 500.00 + dollar range.Ended up picking up a whites Prism 5 it was a good deal.Sorry to say it sits in closet, not really what I had my heart on.But the more I read about the ace 250 I wish picked a garrett machine. But being a whites fan I didn't trust the price and didn't know the machine. At time I was looking at 550 machine. But the ace 250 sounds great and for a lot less money, I'm green with envy.I did get what i wanted in hearts desire a whites xlt.,.. but that ace 250 still looks like fun and simple and a real coin and what have you. IM ALL GREEN WITH ENVY.

The Prism 5 is a good little detector, albeit a wee over priced.
So what exactly were you looking for? Don't sell your prizm yet.
It will be a nice back up detector.

It's a great tot lot machine-as well as parks and the such. Has tonal qualities to go along with the ID to help. I understand it's lighter than the XLT (could never afford one!) and that means a lot to a general coin-ring hunter like me. I like the fact that I can hunt at higher than normal sweep speeds (competition hunting never got out of my blood) in the Relics mode (best mode on the machine-lessens target masking) because of time limitations and search a LARGE area in no tiime. With sensitivity set at 3 bars and good overlapping of the coil it's very quiet and efficient for my searches and the faster sweep speed pretty matches higher sens. settings since it goes deeper at faster sweep speeds. I wouldn't know what to do with an XLT-it would probably mean that I'd have won the lottery and went to the detector store!

The 4.5 sniper coil works well and is very reasonable priced. Might want to look into it especially for working the trashy areas.

[added] - The ProPointer is a very nice addition

Yeah I orginally sold my xlt for money at half price quite awhile go.Got prism to replace it.Still missed xlt picked a xlt back up for price i orginally sold my orginal xlt in like new condition on feebay.I lucked out.And more i here heard about ace 250 more I like it,as a simple get up and go machine. Thanks for info and replies guys.:surprised:

The remarkable thing about the 250 is that Garrett threw some stuff in that is only found in higher priced machines yet kept the price down to an affordable range to introduce more folks to this great hobby. The sales have been astronomical and paid for a new wing on the factory and the employment of another 120 people. This all didn't happen because the 250 ain't what it's claimed to be and the hottest selling machine on the market. If you pick one up you'll never look back. Good luck on your decision.

I think most people would agree that you get a lot of bang for your buck with respect to the Ace, especially the 250. When equipped with the larger 9x12 coil, it will go as deep as any of the other Garretts, or their competition. If it is lacking anything, it's a volume control (there are several ways around that problem), and a fancy full-color display (which decreases battery life). It even has a hidden feature, most users eventually find on their own.

I must admit that I own two Ace 250s, so I don't have to change coils in the field. Justification enough as far as I am concerned.

There is one thing you can't do with an Ace, and you touched on it; there is no way to be green with envy!

You made a wise choice. The Ace 250 is a monster. Once you start using it you will love it. Hunt in all metal mode for awhile and get used to digging targets with it. Then try something different. I used to use jewelry mode, but now all I hunt in is usually all metal.

Doesn't everyone? :) That's what Jack Lowry told me before he sent it to me to test years back, " You'll love it." And he was right.

Alan Applegate,

What "hidden feature" are you talking about? Have I missed something?
Tulsa, I don't know what he means-but I can think of a few I found. The longer or extended sound on nickels and gold in the midtone range means I overlook some quick midtone "ticks" which are usually tiny foil. Also, two targets sometimes "mix" with their respective sounds telling you to investigate. Many have found good finds next to trash knowing this. Of course the greater depth by "twitching" as mentioned by Bill also helps sometimes with the ID of the target. My favorite "tell" in the areas I search is the big target giveaway-it almost always hits dead on "dime" reading and of course gives a good signal whenever I raise the coil quite a bit. Hope you enjoy.

There are two levels of Pin Point. The sharper one (if you can call it that) is accessed by pushing the Pin Point button twice rapidly. It's tricky to get used to, but it does help narrow down the area.
