Don't you just hate it when you "MIGHT" have a key date...found two different IH's a couple years ago..first one was 187 and the last number was just gone...then found another 187 and a darned hole destroyed the last one...got this SLQ(obviously narrowed down to one of two dates)SLQ [attachment 26031 Mercs007.jpg]by the back [attachment 26034 Mercs008.jpg] and just think, if I could just see a 6, I'd have a few bucks in my pocket.
 
Actually there is a way to tell on a dateless type 1 standing liberty quarter, if it is a 1916 or not. This one looks like it has to much wear. On all 1916 SLQ'S the head cuts the dotted line at the edge of the coin and is one of the last things that will wear out. Go into Heritage coin auctions and look at 1916 SLQ'S that have been sold and you can get a good close up of the top of the head. All 1917's, the head is below the dotted line. Well, were you able to come up with a 6 on that SLQ? Unlike buffalo nickles where you can use that Nic-A-Date acid stuff and bring out the date, the date on worn silver is probably lost forever unless someone knows a trick that I don't know about. HH.

I know the feeling Jack! I also found a variety 1 Standing Liberty Quarter without a date. I wish I could find out what the acid was to bring back dates like the Nic-A-Date does for the Nickels. Oh well, just have to wish the next one is the illusive 1916 and in better shape.
