Man its taken me a few years but i think i'm seeing the light and have been hunting with minelab users for a while now and they use the excaliber for land and water and another buddy that uses the se pro but i like how the safari is set up it seams simple enough for me to run and was wondering about discrimnation against iron and does aluminum read out differently from siler and copper? watched one in action and snapped out a 8" large cent ,just would like to know more about it!

The Safari is very easy to set up and its cross-saving feature is handy too. Andy Sabisch's Quattro & Safari Handbook is almost a must have, if you are going to buy a Safari. You should have no problem discriminating out iron and pulltabs pretty much read above a nickel and well below a penny, so they aren't a problem either. The only pulltabs I dig is while going after nickels or hoping for a gold ring. Just give yourself time to learn the machine, for me it usually takes about a year before the light goes on. Some have problems with small well rusted iron (especially sq. nails) reading up in the silver range (not in my area) and I sometimes have "clad" pennies, dimes and quarters mimicking one another, but I've never had that problem with silver coins. Thankfully the I.D. has always been dead on with silver...

thank you mtnmn and akita, yeah in my area we still get the occasional square nail too and we've discovered in our area when the colonials were settling this area that when they ran out or running low of iron to make nails they blended copper content roughly about 30% in with the process and I think alot of times this is why we get the nails, my deep tech stuff will usually disc it out but once in a while i'll get a small like roofing nail, Akita that post you wrote was great info another thing wanted to ask how does against iron masking?

I have Zero problem with diggin iron/steel, so the iron masking must work great. I'd also add that the area I live in is weathered limestone/dolomite with a lot of Fe in the soil.

But dont ask me about aluminum 'can slaw' and buried chopped up woven wire fencing. You have to understand the tones with odd shaped aluminum or you will dig a lot of it.

yes aluminum is a big problem in my area also do alot of farm fields and its just strewed all over and tin foil too!

Tin foil you can easily screen out, but you do discriminate out some of the gold range that way.

Will try using the "Low Trash Density" setting in the lower trash areas and see if that helps any with coin I.D-ing problems. Have noticed other brand of detectors will also get pennies and dimes mixed up from time to time.

AMC,

Lots of good posts here. Holler if you have more questions on the Minelab Safari. Love to help you and make you a good deal on one. Thanks Bart.

Easy to see how the pennies and dimes get mixed up since they are basically copper electrically speaking (copper plated in modern pennies and copper core in modern dimes).
