IM with SmartFind vs. Smart Find with disc

So if I set Iron Mask to say, -22, then hit Detect to go to the SmartFind screen, is that exactly the same as setting a disc pattern to cover the same area as IM, and then also hunting in SmartFind?

I've seemed to notice that IM mode has a crisper sound to it than disc mode, even with very little disc set in the pattern. My imagination, or is there something to it?

I'm honestly not sure DF..and this needs to be answered by somebody a lot smarter than I am:rolleyes:
I ain't real good with tecnical answers:cool:...so dewcon4414 or Chris(SoCenWI) where are you?????:)
Dew and Chris always give real good answers to the tec stuff...and even I can understand them:thumbup:

My thinking was that it may be advantageous to hunt with the simulated IM22 and have the
option to switch over to an AM setting to verify targets. Looking forward to some input here.

Guessing without Mine Lab's input here would be just guessing. But if I were to guess, I would look to their inclusion of the dense trash setting on the new Etrac. Quite possibly the smart find screen may have additional software programming running in the background that the IM screen mode is not running or vice-versa. Smoke and mirrors maybe, left for us to figure out. Send the question directly to Mine Lab and see what they say.

Didn't mean to stump the band - guesses/subjective opinions are helpful too!

I've been running in SmartFind with nails and crown caps disc'd, ferrous tones, but with IM set up in AM mode. Then I switch over to IM when I get an iffy signal to check it out better, and the tones are noticeably different (to me anyway). So I was thinking of trying just IM, but above AM mode (around 22 or so), and go back to conductive. I was thinking the tones might be coming in better in IM than with disc, but am not sure.

Just wish it would stop raining so I can try it out...

A pattern set the same as a IM technically should be the same.... but what ive found is if you watch your smartscreen the X in IM sometimes falls within the disc screen. However most of the time in disc it will fall outside of the darkened area. To me that means IM is a bit tighter in its disc. Thats why if say you LEARN a target you may still get chirping. Also didnt someone once write that you cant disc out the far upper right of a screen? That might mean if i disc... it might not start where i first start my cursor.

Another thing to consider about getting different sounds might be the way good and bad targets are combined when in close proxsemity. It may have nothing to do with IM vs disc.
