Impressed with the Safari

I am impressed with these beach finds because I am from Wisconsin not some warm vacation spot in the south. The seagulls, a few dog walkers and me are the only ones on the beach. Still have on winter jackets, gloves and boots.
I have picked up over 70 coins from a small beach that I had hit at least 6 times last summer/fall. Most of the coins show signs of being there through the winter or longer.
With my other detectors this early in the year a day with 7 coins would be a good day. The beaches around here have another month or two before they start to get seeded again, than I start picking up more coins per day.
21 coins, toy car, metal bracelet, key and a 925 ring. The other day I picked up 49 coins on the same small beach.....Z

Good haul, I keep going back and forth between Safari and SE. I like to hear those positive remarks about Safari, as it looks to be an easier machine to use than SE.

I sure would like to know how you get away with detecting on a Wisconsin beach? I live in Wisconsin too and have been told all beaches and waterways in the state are off limits to detecting! I have many fine beaches here where I live and have been told by the DNR that if i GET CAUGHT WITH MY METAL DETECTOR ON ANY OF THEM I will loose my detector get a big fine and they will even take my auto!

Hi dont know nothing
I live in Milwaukee only a few blocks from Lake Michigan. The beaches I go to are all county parks. I went to the county and asked where I could detect. They told me I can detect in all county parks in Milwaukee county even golf courses, tot lots. I went to a golf course and asked the employee there if I could detect and got a yes answer and thanks for asking for permission. The Sheriff and Milwaukee police have come and talked to me a number of times while at the beach detecting asking how I was doing. Had long discussions with some of them on metal detecting. Some beaches are state parks and you can not detect on them. You can but there is something about if you lost a item and need to look for it with a detector plus you need a permit etc, etc...
Go to your county office and ask them. Go to the city parks office and ask them. I also went to the city and asked them if I could detect in city parks in downtown Milwaukee and I was told there isn't anything on the books saying no I can't.
I don't know what to tell you my friend I did not go to the dnr and ask never occurred to me to do that. But I am sure that some one would have told me that I shouldn't be doing beach detecting in the last 3 years. County employees have asked me to find things for them that they had lost.
I only detect on beaches and do a few tot lots. I have knee problems and can't bend down and get up very well.
I am not the only one down on the beach some time 5 or 6 of us down there detecting... Z

Tinfoil you would have to say that to me. I was just getting to the point that I don't want to dig those #12's anymore because those are the guys that are 5 and 6 scoops down nice bottle caps. Thanks, will start digging those guys again. I do dig the #10's, so far 2 cheap rings with #10. Thanks ....Z

zeekeys,

I haven't done any coin shooting but am a relic hunter and a #12 signal is frequently a cuff sized button at a medium depth. I think I might be a little leary of passing over those targets.

Just a humble opinion,
TomH

I am sorry Tinfoil I think the #12 was wrong. I will be going out this morning and will look to see what the bottle cap #'s are. I usually don't pay much attention to the #'s, it is more of sounds that stops me in my tracks. I will glance at the #'s when stopped in my tracks. I myself don't really care at this point what the #'s are because I am still digging #'s up and down the scale just to get to know there is something in the ground or in my case in the sand. I don't think pull tabs, bottle caps or foil are bad, they are there, just dig the suckers and get on. I want to know when the Safari sounds off that there is something there that it is sounding off about. It will come with the #'s when I am really satisfied that the Safari is sounding off for real or not. I know some people are in a hurry to get proficient at their detector as soon as possible. That is my aim but I let it come on it own with experience. It takes longer but not as stressed as some.
I thought that when I got older I would know a lot more but the older I get the less I am sure of. I know I can not drink all the brandy in one tavern let alone the whole city. It is like that with metal detecting. I will never get all the coins but I do get my fair share. And that is good enough for me.
Thanks Ngrelic and smkuder for replies. I like the Safari because it is a simple machine. I think all the trouble comes because some what to make it more complicated than it need be,causing frustration.
Thats how I see it from the Drivers seat......Z

Tinfoil was out for a little while and noticed I could get readings from single digits to 40 on bottle caps, depending on the condition and depth of the cap.....Z

Sometimes I babble on and never get to the point. The point about the 80 coins found on a small beach is:
Either my detecting skills greatly improved over the winter with no practice and reading the manual. The detector was out of the box once when I got it new and I put the batteries in and got some coins and ran them across the coil a few times and put the detector back in the box.
Result: I don't think my skills improved that much with it in the box and reading the manual.
Maybe my luck has greatly increased?
Result: if you look at my daily lottery tickets you know my luck hasn't improved one bit.
Maybe the detector is really much better at picking up deeper targets?
Result: 80 coins from a small beach that is supposed to have been detected by many and nothing is left to find until next summer.
Or maybe I was the only one nuts enough to get out there this early.
Result: That has a good probably of being right on....
That is why I am impressed....Z
