in some cases, smaller is nicer

i did use the smaller version of the other one on friday afternoon and it really did work great.

the square handle is only at the bottom part where it bolts in place.

my plan is to use the larger model of the PS today and the smaller 6.5 SS................lets call the PS.............SnS

i would only use this type of scoop 1 or 2 places, the reily's round style scoops really work great on the flat sandy beach area for me, but i do not always hunt there.

so, i have been looking for another scoop and had no knowledge of the SnS scoop until tues. or wed and by then, i had already bought the SS scoop=6.5" version.

now u mentioned the part about the handle being on the outside.................my 2 hour spin yesterday found that with the handle there it did make for recovery faster and this area where i use it is full of small stuff, many bullet casings...........90% - 22's and when using a sifter that was ok, but at times it is ruff and the floating sifter does not work in ruff to well, but with this smaller hole scoop, so far all i have to do is give it a shake while in the water and bingo, all the sand is gone and the smaller targets are at the flat bottom.

one more thing................this SnS fellow makes a very nice floating sifter as well, but a sifter now may never be needed ever again.

more testing today and this long weekend

good luck tony

Does he sell them or did he just make up two of them for you? I would like something like that for Lake Hunting as those small holes would be great for keeping the small gold from getting away :)

Has been some interest in building a titanium scoop for all the crazy people who digs holes at the beach.

This is part of one email I received from a friend who has a fabrication shop and has been looking into the possibility of making scoops from titanium...

"Thanks for the replies and all of the help you have offered. I've worked in sheet metal for more than 30 yrs. myself mostly job shop & production manufacturing. I have never worked with titanium and am intrigued! Although it sure is some expensive stuff. I would be glad to swap knowledge for work if that would be of interest to you. I don't think there is much of a market for titanium scoops paying market price for material but I sure wouldn't mind playing with one.

My goal is the perfect scoop if not for sale at least to use. Titanium seems to be closer to that!

I got a quote from a supplier on the net and it about blew my socks off!

Pleased to offer Titanium
.078/.080" x 36" x 96"
1 pc $1760.00/pc
FOB Shipping Point

That is about $350 per scoop in material alone. There's no way I could rely on salvage material an take orders, but I could build a couple of scoops that way. Seems that there will also be some major design changes.

Looking forward to hearing from you."

As you can see, the problem is the price of material to be able to offer one that wouldn't cost as much as a new detector!

If all goes well, hope to give "Ti" a real work-out on the OBX this next month!

Maybe in the future, some way maybe found to make a few...
so some old gray haired men can "wag" something hard and stiff in front of them one more time! LOL!!

[size=large]I got mine a couple of weeks ago. I decided on the 6.5" size and it's great. This is by far the best scoop that I have ever used for water or dry sand. I was impressed at how quickly the dry sand went through this scoop.

The small holes in front and back capture the smallest items you could think of. I especially like the straight tapered handle that is 90 degrees to the scoop. The handles on all my other scoops were at an angle, and that made it more difficult to retrieve the items.

The foot pad on the back works just as advertised. An added feature that I like, and I was going to do myself, is the notch at the top of the handle. This allows you to position the scoop underwater, and even though you can't see it you know exactly what direction the scoop is pointing.

Mat, Look at the top of the handle, They put a black line on it if not you do it...use a permanent marker...so you know what direction the scoop is pointing by lookin at the marker.. check out the pix! My is very very very lite..got the aluminum prototype in 2005 and still goin!

GraveDigger,

Can you PM me with the info on where to get these scoops? I have the sunspot one, but i like this other one you are showing. Is this still available?

Thanks,

Ken

Max,

Thanks for taking the time to reply in great detail....much appreciated.

I like the look of the smaller 6.5".....maybe useful for dry/wet sand hunting when the water is too rough.

[size=large]Hi Joe, As I said in my post they sawed a notch in the top of the handle then put some black paint inside. I really like that feature. You always know which direction the scoop is facing. I see that your handle seems to be the same. Is it notched or just painted (marker) on? Looks notched to me. Happy Hunting!!!
