[attachment 40761 MVC-004F.JPG]Hello everyone , I haven't been here in a while, do to the fact that I haven't hunted much in the last two years. but anyway I was wandering if anyone but me has had a policeman threaten to arrest them for carrying a leach digger...I was hunting a school yard in northern Ohio and he stopped to check what I was doing and asked for my ID. when I pulled my jacket back to get my wallet out and he freak when he saw the stealth lol. we argued for a minute or two but I seen he was getting angry so I backed off. he said it didn't matter if it had a blunt end and wasn't sharp it was still a blade over 4inches and I had it concealed lol.....I think next time I'll take a little shovel lol...Here is some stuff I found at the school yard.

Nice you got some coins...

Scoops, sorry to hear about your tangle with the law...

If I was approached by a Police officer in a public place here down-under, and he found a 7 or 8 inch blade on me I would be challenged too.
I guess that a small digging shovel maybe like a Predator would be more acceptable...

I would like to get a Predator Little Eagle - Model 58, ( Can't get 'em here in Australia.
But my emails to Predator tools ~ or other U.S dealers that I have emailed have never been answered.

I have a small British made fully forged solid carbon steel spade coming this week ~ from an interstate Aussie garden supply company.
I'll have to cut its blade down somewhat, but I'll be happier to be caught in a park with a spade than a blade!

Hi Scoops,
These brushes with authority seem to be going about, I was kicked out of a reserve controlled by Parks and Wildlife this morning, this is just a recreational area with a few barbeque's nothing of historical significance, Anyway this park ranger didn't see the funny side of metal detecting and I had my name taken along with the Make, Model and Serial number of the SE and told that if I was caught in any National Park or Reserver controlled by them, I would have my detector confiscated, and I thought yeah the only way he will get the SE is if it's wrapped around his neck.
No sense of humor some of these guys. Apparently this restriction includes any beaches controlled by Parks and Wildlife. One wonders if a kid digs up a penny on one of these beaches controlled by these people if the child is allowed to keep the penny or should he put it back in the sand.
Life's too short to let petty little people get you down.

All the best......Boony

Bad luck Boony, perhaps national parks BUT...

I can't possibly see what damage anybody could do detecting a beach!

Some of our rangers are indeed mis-informed control freaks,
if they could observe a detector operator and see his target extraction method,
they ought to let him proceed if his methods were seen to be acceptable...

A responsible operator makes less of an impact than say an echidna digging an ants nest; or how about a wombat burrow...

Hi Snowy,

Nice to see a face with the name.
And yes I agree with what you say, that recreation area that I was in today has no historic value what so ever, you could have a hundred metal detectors in there and they wouldn't do any harm at all, unfortunately some of the rangers can't see past the rules, anyway let them play their little games, I just won't go back there ( It wasn't much good anyway) I picked up a couple of 50c coins three 1c and a silver ring so it's really no loss if I never go back to it.
I have a very good relationship with our local council parks people and they are thrilled to bits with the amount of rubbish I take out of the local parks while I'm getting the good stuff.

There I've had my winge....All the best.....Boony

At a School Yard you say. Those Schools that produce like that are tough one's to find and it looks to me that you are off to a great start on a promising site. I would go to the Police Department and see what someone else says about using the Lesche Digger, just to see if you get the same nonsense as you did with the other officer. What I think was his problem was that he either woke up on the wrong side of the be or he got served cold coffee and they were out of his favorite donuts! But then again, If you weren't detecting and you had a weapon like that on you in a School Yard, then that would be a problem but it is just a digger and all you are doing is using it for that very purpose. Hope you don't get harassed again and one other thing, please don't take a small Shovel. It makes it look bad for the rest of us when someone see's a person digging a hole especially in a School Yard with a Shovel. Good Luck and HH.

The thing that might get you by is having the digger in plain view at all times on a belt outside your clothes. Concealed is a bad idea. To the other hunters, as for hunting in ANY US National Parks, you are lucky they didn't take the detector right then along with your vehicle. That is a long time US law and makes no difference if it is beach or woods etc..Getting by with just a warning was good luck for you.

With most towns having a ZERO tolerance policy you could have been arrested for having it on school grounds. In light of what has been happening at schools kids have been arrested for unbelievable items.
A girl was arrested and suspended from school for having a small chain hanging from her backpack, true! believe it or not.
It's tough to accept it has come to this but it has. You probably would have had the case dropped once you got in court but who needs the hassle. Use a very small gardening shovel and no one can bother you at a school yard. I was approached once and asked what I was using to dig, when I showed the shovel they said "good you didn't bring any type of knife here".

We're living in a different world now Happy hunting, Jeff

I'd have immediately grabbed you and physically body slammed you to the ground! With my knee on your throat and my other knee on your chest (to limit the air intake so as to limit your ability to fight) I'd be calling for backup. And with you on your back and me on top of you I'd be punching you in the face yelling at you to get on your stomache. And I'd keep yelling "Quit resisting!" And I'd continue to punch. Then my buddy could come and start wailing on you with his night stick yelling for you to get on your stomache! This would go on until you are a bloody pulp. Then, (with squad camera still rolling) I'd finally roll you on your stomache and keep pretending you are still resisting and keep trying to hand cuff you, even though, at this point you couldn't resist even if you wanted to, but I and my buddy would keep yelling at you to quit resisting.

Then we'd take you downtown on concealed weapons charge, resisting arrest, striking an officer, trespassing on school grounds, destruction of public property and threatening the lives of children. Somehow we might work in the charges that you might have been on drugs or drunk and a menace to society.

Ask him next if he would rather you walk around with it in your hand, which can't be consider a concealed weapon.Add that of course,he would have to asnswer all the calls of a man in the park with a knife.

thanks for the advice James, I do want to go back again, hate the three hour drive but if the cops are that protective of the town maybe that is why the school yard still has some goodies in it lol.......don't worry about the ground after I'm done digging you can't tell anyone has been there thanks to my plug tool....heres a pic.

well I usually ask at the police department if there are any laws in town about metal detecting , this time I didn't. but they always say no , then I make sure I have the policeman's name off of his badge. that way at least I can say that officer so and so said it was ok lol.

evidently it doesn't matter if it is concealed or on the end of your nose, he said nothing with over a 4 inch blade and he also added that it didn't matter what you called it, stealth, digging tool, or tampon it still had a blade over 4 inches lol....Ok I just threw in the part about the tampon lol..

I just think it is so funny watching "Cops" on T.V., you know, the real show where they show cops busting people (and most of them rightly so) but what is strange is that they hold these guys down while they make impossible demands on them or grab their wrist to cuff them and keep yelling at them to quit resisting all the while the person is saying they aren't resisting.

Do these cops think we are stupid? A lot of them on those shows are drama queens.

I will admit though that I highly respect the good cops who put their lives on the line every day just to keep the fabric of civilization from tearing.

Many cops in the Columbus, Ohio area basically work for the Mafia or are on the pay. My oldest brother found that out the hard way when he went to city hall with a bunch of citizens in their neighborhood to try to get the mafia out of the area. The cops stuck up for the mafia boss and told my brother he best just turn around and walk out the door if he knows what's best. Later they pulled him over and two cops but a gun to his head to send a strong message. It worked. He moved out of town.

I have a wilcox which is less threatning. I also have the lesche but don't use it much in parks. I'd go back just be less threatning looking the next time. HH
