incredible finds for me!

It's been awhile since I posted anything so I wanted to share this,This week hunting in a local park by a high school I found two big /big class rings.A 1967 and a 1970
Hunting with the 705 using the 10.5 x 7.5khz coil.
I'm really wound tight on this weeks finds.
Stopped by my local coin shop today to pickup a 2013 silver eagle,And he gave me a scrap price on the second one I found of $213.00 (84.9 grams with stone)
The total weight of the two combined is 142.0 grams.
They both rang up a bit on the choppy side in the 20/24 range.
The first one I found 2/5 and the second I found 2/9.

Nice find Easy....13 months with the 705.... no gold ring for me yet.found a couple that i recovered for people...but not one i could keep.

one thing but, that scrap price does not sound close to what I get here in Australia
you didn't say what carat gold they are but...
for 9k I get around the $20 mark per gram...eg 85 grams of 9k = $1700
14k $32 , 18k $41.
I have learned to beware retail stores, shopping centre buyers etc and deal with a couple of trusted bulk gold refiners
I think you guys have 8k and 10k where as we do not and if it is 8k it would be $17 or so per gram here

I'm not here to say what anyone should do with their finds. That is a topic that has been discussed on just about every forum, at one time or another. But for those of you who, like me, make every effort to return lost class rings, here are some tips that might help you in your quest......

The original text of the post indicates the finds were made in a local park, near a high school. The poster's signature indicates where he lives. The rings have a letter R in the stones, and dates along side. Anyway, a quick google search of high schools near the "home town" is Roxana. The larger ring has the initials M S. The 1970 ring may have initials as well. But I can't see them in the pic. Another google search brought up the names of the students graduating from Roxana in 1968. There are only two students with the initials MS graduating from Roxana in 1968. One male and one female. Judging by the size of the ring, I'd assume this one belonged to a male. The name of the only male who graduated from Roxana in 1968 was a Mark Smith. Elapsed time to find this......less than 5 minutes.

Again, I'm not taking sides on what we do with our finds. But for those who want to try to find the original owners, it can be sometimes be done quite quickly. And often, the reward of returning it to the original owner far exceed the scrap values. JMHO HH Randy

Finding gold is always a charge. Finding two in succession is even a bigger thrill.
And not unlike Randy, I'm not going to try to influence anyone's decision on what to do with their finds. I just know how I'd feel if someone contacted me out of the blue to tell me that they'd found my class ring. It would take me back to those days, and bring back fond memories of good times not recalled for eons.

The first ring found does not have any initials on it to identify an owner with,The second ring with initials which I found yesterday was found mid morning I work every Saturday.
When I got home from hunting I had about an hour and a half before going to work.In that time frame I had to prepare for the rest of my day get something to eat get cleaned up and ready to go to work.
I had enough time to clean up the second ring and snap some pics and post them.I have"nt had enough time to do anything yet with the ring and I apoligize for not being able to locate and return the ring within a
few hours or so of finding it.However I did a bit of browsing on my phone last night during my break time at work,I already knew the persons name was Mark Smith as digger had stated.
And if I can locate the right person I will be very happy and thrilled to return it. As far as seeing what the ring was worth in scrap I was at the coin shop and had it in my pocket cause I stopped in there on my way home from hunting I stated to the shop owner that the ring was not for sale I was just courious of what something like that was worth in scrap.
I am not a treasure hunter I love MDing as a hobby it is a adventure and I love pulling something cool out of the ground it's a thrill for me.
The only thing I ever sell is the scrap copper and brass I find,I am not into this for the money,I make just over 50k a year an that money just supports me and my girl friend and I pay insurance on my daughter.
So I don't need the money made from selling any of my finds. Since I bought the X-terra 705 I have been a member of this forum and I learned alot from Randy's book and thank you Randy on a job well done!
I have also learned alot from others here , many who have helped me directly and would like to thank all who helped me learned to use my 705. So next time someone makes a find valued over $100.00 are you going to turn it in to the police as the law states it's the right thing to do,But I really don't think so!
I don't think I will be posting any more finds here as there is a few that I think are to judgemental for my taste.I will return maybe for advice or try to learn more on the 705. I have always tried to do the right things in my life,sometimes the rewards are good , But from own experiences it seems I get burned more doing the right thing so sometimes maybe we should'nt do anything at all.
But in this case I am going to make a call to a man to see if this is his ring and will return it if possible. After reading the replys to this post I just had to vent a bit so please get the facts before passing judgement on other's.

Relax rseasy1. Looking back over the thread I only see one person questioning/assumming what you did with them, and one echo. All others were supportive and congratulatory of your finds. Hopefully we all understand that whatever you decide to do with them is ultimately YOUR decision, and really none of our concern.

Here in the States we have gold that's 10k, 14k, 18k, 21k, and 24k.
Most (if not all) class rings are 10k, and the bulk of the gold jewelry found is 10k and 14k.

I'm not judging your decision either, just a word of caution. I recently posted a lost and found on Craigslist for as ring that I recovered. I received an email from a guy who would not provide me with details, just that the ring that I found was his. I asked him for a detailed description and he said "do we really need to go there" he also said that he "already notified the Police that his ring was found". Meanwhile the few details that he gave me were not even close and there was absolutely no possability that the ring was his. There are a lot of scumbags out there, be cautious when seeking owners not to get scammed.

Well done! on your nice finds.Might be worth checking if the person is still alive without making contact with relatives as it could cause emotional turmoil. i know someone who found a dog chain, it had a address on it took it to the address knocked on the door and the woman said my husband lost that years ago and has since passed away and the dog.Felt a bit awkward at the time and said i dont think i will be returning anymore items to me

Don't bail on us reasy1. To be honest, I understood your initial post to say that, when the coin shop gave you the scrap price, it was a done deal. Bad on me for reaching that conclusion. And good for you for following up on locating the original owner. You're an asset to this forum and I hope to see you here for a long time to come. I'm not trying to stir anything up here but when Terra1959 said that the scrap price that was offered seemed low I had to agree with him. I think he was referring to what they offered you based on "85 grams". Here in the U.S. 85 grams of 14kt gold as of Friday would be worth $2657.43 as scrap and a reputable gold dealer should be offering you around $2000 for 85 grams. 85 grams of 10kt gold would be worth $1897.94 and they should offer you around $1420.

The problem is, I don't think your scale is correct. I've attached a picture of what 112 grams on a scale would look like. I couldn't scrounge up 142 grams. I have a reference weight that I use to double check my scale so I know it's within less than a gram in accuracy. My scale is nothing special, just a standard kitchen scale that I only use to weigh gold and the reference weight allows me to check it every now and then. Anytime I cash gold in I weigh it before I take it to the gold dealer just to make sure they are being honest with me. On the scale I have 7 and a half rings a solid 14kt 20" gold chain and (2) solid 14kt 8" gold bracelets and a thin gold eagle pendant.

Again, not trying to stir things up but it's aways good to know what the actual weight of your finds before you take it to exchange for cash. I do understand that you didn't exchange them for cash, I'm just hoping to help you and others for when you are ready to cash something in.

You can find fairly accurate scrap gold calculators online. Plug in your numbers and then deduct 25% and that will get you into the ballpark of what a fair gold dealer should be paying you. Depending on your area you may do a little better or worse. It took me a while to find one in my area that pays pretty well.

Most 14kt gold men's rings weigh 12-20 grams with the exception of something like a huge super bowl ring which about 100 grams and would fit on two of my fingers.

It is hard some times trying to find the true owners of a lost item. I found a gold ring in Canada on time and after locating the owner, I thought, he informed me that he still has his ring and that there was no other person from his class with the initials the same as his. The ring was from Canada and I never have found the owner.

Yes it's nice to see rings returned to the owners and in the same note I have had the same scumbags make attempts to get a ring not belonging to them . I had to learn the hard way and gave a class ring back to whom I believed was the rightful owner only to have the original owner call me a day later with proof that it was there's . But I was lucky enough to write down the perp's license number when they left . Today I still can't explain why I did that but I did .Then I contacted the authorities and was luck enough to get it returned to me then the owner got it before it was scrapped . I found another a few years ago and posted it in the paper's lost in found like this . " Class ring found , Central High class of 71 , contact me with full description . Will be returned to rightful owner. Call ***-**** . I had two calls and neither caller could give me a full description , I gave it a month and then scrapped the ring . Funny thing is I had both callers hang up when they couldn't tell me if it was a man's or a women's and one even said both and said they'd forgot ??? How can you forget that ??? They hung up when I asked them that very same question . I also had found a diamond (identified by a inner inscription) wedding ring that the owner honestly told me they collected the insurance value on . I asked them for the insurance company name and they told me but then just said " Keep it , I'm not married to that jerk anymore " and so I called the insurance company cause I felt obligated as they were actually the rightful owners and they said the same thing . Simply put they said it was already claimed on their loss's over a decade ago and they simply couldn't accept it with the hassles of paperwork , etc . And they congratulated me for my find and thanked me for my honesty . That ring funded a new detector ! It's all up to you the finder how you want to handle it . And I've had rings I just kept on the simple prince able of "Finder's Keeper's" . Nice Find ! HH , Woodstock
