Indian head nickels.....

Just curious what it is about the indian head nickels that make them so prone to wear as opposed to other coins from that time period.
I seldom find one where the date is readable.

Poor placement of the date was the main reason...they put on a raised area instead of a recessed area.

I would have to agree with MrGee, the SLQ had the same problem
