Infinium and Surf Pi

I understand this is probably like a Ford/Chevy thing but am am looking to try out PI detecting (mostly at the Jersey shore) and I am wondering if anyone has any feedback on how the Surf Pi holds up next to the Infinium? If anyone has tried both I would love to get some feedback. I have experience on the Minelab line now, including owning an Excal II so I am a Pi rookie but not a rookie to detecting.
Any other options in that price range would be appreciated too!

The Infinium is the only one of the bunch ( the others being the Whites, Detector Pro and Tesoro PI's) that has to be ground balanced. This is due to it not having it tuned for salt water. This can be both positive and negative. Positive in the sense that you can tune it to the conditions, where there could be areas where there is a higher concentration of salt. The negative is that its not as easy to use in terms of turn on and go. It also has multiple high-low and low-high tones, which could be used as a form of discrimination, but most PI people dig all regardless. In reading posts about the Infinium, it seems the 8 inch mono coil is the best overall for water hunting.


The Whites PI Pro and Dual Field are practically turn on and go. The Detector Pro HH has the pulse delay adjustment...and I believe the Tesoro Sand Shark has a pulse width adjustment.

The Head Hunter is a really nice and light unit but like I PM'd you, if you get that one, get it with the 8 inch coil or you will be digging 3 foot wide holes trying to pin point with the big 11 inch open coil.

I hear the Whites Dual Field is deep and you can pin point pretty well with it.

As with all Tesoros, they are great units with a life time warranty. The Sand Shark may get a tad less depth than the others, but there is one hunter here in NJ that uses one and loves it. He has not posted in a while though.

Looks like this Sunday will be rainy and possibly snowy and if so, since my PI is not 100 percent water proof, I may not be using it. At some point we will hook up so you can try mine...I will be in touch.

Excal and CZ-21 are my main detectors for the surf but the Whites Dually has earned a place in my arsenal as my deep seeker. If you can max out the settings you will hit targets at 24" which is deep enough for anyone who doesn't have the physique of Charles Atlas. When I was looking into PI machines I tried the Infinium and I found it to be a good machine with 'some' discrimination but what turned me off of it was the tones; it sounded like nails on a blackboard to me.uke: I hunt to relax as much as anything else and the tones were really abrasive to me personally so it got struck off of my list of PI machines. The Dually delivers the goods and is easy to use without the annoying scratchiness of the Infinium.
To be honest I still like my Excal the best, perhaps because I am so familiar with it or maybe because I can tell with 90% accuracy what I'm going to dig before I dig it. However, the Dually has won me over and I use it regularly - especially when the beaches are sanded in.
