Infinium ....good choice for coin shooting?

Steve from Ohio

New member
I have been a MD'er for over 25 years. Never have owned a PI and was wondering if the Infinium would be a good choice for the beaches of Florida and also for coin hunting here in Ohio. I recently was able to compare a TDI and a Minelab E-trac. The TDI was deeper in many instances and I was impressed. I really liked the TDI's ability to null out iron. But it is not waterproof.

I really like the idea of having a machine that can be also used in the water. I love water hunting in Florida and so after looking around, I see that the Infinium may be the best choice for me.

Is the Garrett Infinium a machine I should consider for coin shooting on dry land? Many of the parks I am at are pretty trashy. I am also going to be out west for some nugget hunting.

Is the Garret system of ID ing with sounds enough to make it acceptable as a coin shooter?

Some people do well with the Infinium on the beach, some people bitch about it being noisy in the surf as it was designed for gold prospecting and is way more sensitive than other beach PI's. Garrett told me this, as they get these calls alot from newbe Infinium users who are "disapointed" in the surf with stability. They really dont realize it a "prospecting machine" primarily. You will have to tune it accordingly for being in the surf to get it smooth. It is deep though. I wish they would make a dry land only Infinium so they can improve on its sensitivity/features even more but the beach hunters will bitch about it. So in a way the water proof design can be its achilles heal for prospecting as per no updates like Minelab PI's get every 2 years or so.

Infinium is great though. Also the Sea Hunter Mark II is a great beach machine as it is what it is designed for. Id say the Mark II will still punch some deeper than the beach VLF's. I wouldnt use the Infinium in parks as you could dig some monster holes and make a mess to get those deep targets. Up to you on that one. Just dig the low/high tones for coins/high conductors. I do use it in dry lake beds for coin/jjewelry hunting and is fine. Never used in a park, though.

TDI is good machine also. For nugget hunting it gets about .2 gram average for smallest and the Infinium .3 gram for smallest.

The infinium will operate anywhere but to use it as a coin machine in parks and gardens and school grounds is probably not a good idea for a few reasons:
1. It will be noisy due to electical interference in suburban areas
2. It does not have discrimination which most coin shooters find desirable for trashy areas.
3. You will need to use a small coil in order to reduce the elec interference and to get in between the trash and as a result your detecting will be slow going.

For coin hunting I would be inclined to recommend a good VLF machine with an Auto ground track All Metal pinpoint mode and a TID full range Disc mode that has a good level of fixed ground rejection plus Notch and sensitivity controls. Try to find one that has a fast recovery time between targets.

Whites, Garrett, Tesoro and Minelab all have a great range of coin and Relic machines and of these I think Tesoro and Garrett offer the best performance per dollar.

I'vebeen huntting for 30 years. I've used all kinds of detector for coin huntting ,I have found that the Infinium is one of the best coin huntting detectors out there. It's high low signals will let you know weather it's a good coin or zinger. And it go's very deep.I use an 8 inch mono coil and dig Quarters at 18 to 20 inches.Have any Questions E-mail me.
