Infinium underwater headphones question

I looked to see if this was answered in the forum and didnt find it, or maybe I was just blind. Anyway, my question is this. My land phones for my infinium have volume control, but it seems the underwater version of the phones do not have a volume control. So HOW do you control the volume? Do the underwater phones have a built in limiter or what? I know the threshold will lower the background noise so does has some volume control there but not necessarily control a blast of sound from a large or a close find?

I havent bought the underwater phones yet but I just would like to know. I hope it doesnt sound like a stupid question though it must. Its just very curious.

The best thing I found is to add rubber type gasket material (got it at Depot, flooring dept) and foam to each ear cup.

I cut pieces of the gasket to fit each ear cup and then added thicker foam after I found a comfortable level for each ear.

It's real easy and I just throw on the phones and the volume is perfectly preset for each ear:cool:.

Thanks, thats a good idea. I had written Garrett the same question. They stated that using them underwater only made the use of a volume control unnecesssary as by turning the threshold down to barely hearing level, then underwater the sound would be at a tolerable level.

To me that sounded like a strange explanaition. Your idea would work, but would make it necessary to replace the foam constantly I think, if used underwater. Wish there was someone nearby who had the LS and the underwater phones so I could just try them out before I bought them. It just doesnt make sense that being underwater makes the need for a volume control unnecessary. Sound travels far better underwater. And you will have leakage into the cups very easily providing a direct path. And I know with the regular headphones that if the volume is too lound, then it can hurt your ears. So the only thing I can think of, is they have a volume limiter built into the underwater phones that prevents the sound going beyond a certain limit. jAll I can think of anyway.

Guess I am just going to have to break down and buy a set and see for myself.

I had the same headset problem I couldn't control the sound,so I call Sue at Garrett and she sent me anew headset problem no more.

The underwater headphones are just as they should be. In the surf the crashing waves can be very loud and the headphones are louder than the stock ones for this reason, and also that under water muffles audio waves.
Garrett told you the correct answer. The threshold is a 3 part switch. It controls the threshold, volume and the sensitivity of the machine. If you need to mute the volume furthure just do the foam pad thing. I use them for prospecting sometimes as they are louder hearing the tiny threshold blips of a small target. Plus they are loud enough were I can hang them on my neck and still hear the tones while hearing what is around me like bears, snakes, lions...and jerks in the woods.

Okay, now I understand. Your explanation has helped alot. Now it makes sense. The gal at Garrett that I talked with, may have said the same thing, but just didnt put it together the way you did. Thank you so much. It just had me puzzled and I wasnt getting any answers that made much sense, at least to my way of thinking. And your explanation of the threshold control told me alot about it, that I guess I hadnt understood before.

I wish that I could use my rattler phones with the infinium. If you are familiar with them. They have just one ear cup. Anyway, Is there any way to make an adapter so I could plug in my rattler phones or any other phones for that matter. I really like them and to be able to use them when I would like to have an ear free...well, would be a pleasure for sure. Especially up in the mountains here...not so much for snakes at that altitude, but bears, lions and , and I really like your description, "Jerks in the woods". A polite description actually.:) I would call them something else entirely..:nono: But it wouldnt be allowed on a family forum.

Regardless, I thought I had seen something on the forum about an adapter that someone was making and selling. Now I cant find the post.

Excellent Pro looking adapters there, I have an appalling not worth a picture $Au.60.00 + freight in my for spare basket.

Hey,
How's it goin' guys? Yeah, my wifey got me one of these adapters. It works great. I use the stock headphones or underwater headphones, but it's nice to have this apapter. That way, I know that if we're ever out in the boonies prospectin' and the other headphones peter out, I have the option of using regular headphones.
Hey, I didn't know that Reid Bridges made those headphone adapters. That's pretty cool. Ya know, he makes a really great straight shaft mod kit for the Infinium that's only $65. I've always prefered the stock "S" shaft myself, but alot o'guys really like to have a straight shaft and he makes a real good one. Thanks for sharing!
Hey This oldgoldchaser, good luck with that:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)
P.S.
Don't try usin' that headphone adapter underwater!

I find the underwater headphones to work just fine. threshold will control volume which is not a problem.

biggest problem is getting a pair that will keep on running. i have gone through 4 pair since August of 09. Garrett is good about replacing but it is down time if you do not havwe an extra set.

I think I have about decided to get a pair of detectorpro set of underwater. They have the Gray Ghost Underwater and I have found an outfit to buy them from that will fit them with the right fitting for my LS for 130.00 bucks total cost. Costs a little more than the Garrett set but I figure the GGU set will work fine for me and maybe last better. They sure have a good reputation anyway.

Yep theres a guy who sell these adaptors just for the Infinium on ebay, just type in Infinium there and you will find them. I made an exteranl speaker system for mine. Cost me like $60 in parts, but it sure does work well. I been meaning to do a video of it in action and put it on youtube. I modeled it after the minelab guys use for there external speaker.

OOPS, I see now someone posted already about the adapters, thats them, Looks good.

I still want to get a set of the adapters for using my other earphones on land. Want to be able to use my rattler phones on land...especailly in rattlesnake areas.
