So Sunday jkline and I made a run at the Old Arboretum on campus, it was dedicated and planted in 1906. Jeff’s silver Panamanian coin and the old 32 EXL rifle casing got my juices flowing. Went up this morning with the Sharpshooter attached to F75 and took a walk in the woods.
First thing I hit in a small clearing was a casing stamped REM-UMC 32 EXL, score!!! Keep swinging and pull out what looks like a short 45-70, then another, and another! Ok, who had a shoot out??? All these were 3-4” deep.
Swung around a bit longer and things got slim so moved over to another small clearing, up pops a 30-06 case and I can clearly see the neck bulge so I knew it was a blank round. All total I dug 7 rounds, enough crust on the case heads that I can only see partial head stamps but all appear to be military marked. I did start popping up 60s clad coins so maybe getting to a hot area, I want some of the silver stuff! Again it gets quiet so move on.
I was walking a barely used trail just catching the edges when I hit an ear splitting solid kablam 89-90 repeatable hit. Going in!! Out pops a 50 cent piece I thought was clad until I saw bright silver! Sprayed it heavy with water and ol JFK starts to appear, 1966!!! Wahoo!!!!!! Plunge pinpointer back in and more buzzing, pulled out what I thought was going to be a silver quarter but shiny only on one side, what? Another coin was with it? Yup, found it! Had a 65 quarter stuck to a 67 quarter in the same hole as JFK. Push around some more an locked on to a 61 penny so everything was in a 12” circle and no more that 5” deep. A few away dug another 65 quarter, and a few more feet away another 65 quarter! Gotta be in the right acre of woods!!!!!
Once home I was able to work on the head stamps and here is what I have for the ‘06: TW56, TW54(two), LC53, SLC4, SL54, and WRA57. The old straight wall rounds were all different: F (at 12:00) S1 (at 4:00) and 3 (at 8:00). R (at 12:00) 66 (at 3:00) F (at 6:00) 2 (at 9:00). The last one has no head stamp that I can see but the firing pin strike is a very distinct D shape. One mostly missing case head stamp ended up being a REM-UMC 32 LCF. Both 32s are centerfire primers.
Fast Draw if you read this a little help on the old straight wall cases would be appreciated. In the one pic its obviously shorter that the 45-70, case mic’d 1.858 and all other measurements were the same as 45-70. 45-60????
