Interesting document from Minelab comparing the E-Trac to the V3

E-Trac001

New member
Minelab just released a 6-page report touting the E-Trac over the V3 . . . an interesting read although in reading the specific claims and comments, some raise questions on accuracy . . . . . here's the text without the images . . . . intererested in what others think . . . . . having both detectors, they are both solid performers and each has features or capabilities the other may not match . . . . . . guess it's in the eye of the beholder when it comes to what facts are the ones that are brought up and which are downplayed . . . . .

that's the worst thing about them.I love my ET and EX , But this report is a little one sided . Someone do a real side by side report.......

This post is getting a whole different reaction on the White's forum, rflo :argue:

That's because we're all busy out digging goodies while they sit on their forum trying to figure out how to use their machines. :detecting: :lmfao:

Actually the V3 is very easy to use and I am certain there is minelab users out there scratching there heads but that was funny.

Well you know coming from minelab its going to be bias. I am sure the whites retaliation to this will be just as bias.. i never took reports from the company very serious. but real world testimony.. now that's the proof you need.. I just got an e-trac and its actually quite user friendly as well.. even if i wasn't coming off an SE i still don't feel i would have a hard time understanding the controls.. I got a feeling its going to be a VERY good relationship between the e-trac and me.

I have the lost treasure with Andy Sabisch's review on the V3. i will post that for everyone in the whites forum..

Does anyone know if he did a review on the E-trac? and if it was in lost treasure or W@E and what issue?

I too would like to see a real side by side comparison of the two, and this is not one. For instance the document touts the discrimination abilities of the e-trac, but we know already that in the cases where the tires really hit the road, the deeper stuff and stuff that's in trashy ground, the readings are often (at least for me) innacurate a good deal of the time. For instance ferrous readings are often all over the board on many good targets. I want to see a side by side comparison on the same targets, deep targets, targets near iron, and see which machine picks them out with the most accuracy.

BUT was it really done by Minelab? Can you or anyone else here direct us to a website, if there is one that can attest to the accuracy of the source of this report?

I looked around the official Minelab website and any other possible locations(using a standard google search) and none seem to be connected directly to an official Minelab document release that has made such comparisons.

So it's starting to look to me like SOMEONE, other than Minelab, has put this comparison together.

In my opinion, its' not an inaccurate report, but it doesn't seem like the sort of thing a company like Minelab could actually be bothered putting together in the first place.

I did a side by side test for over 2 months and the results encouraged me to sell the Vision. The Etrac is better ballanced to me and the lower shaft next to coil was quite flexible to the point of being flimsy on my Vision.I liked the Vision a lot but for me it was to many bells and whistles and not enough performance on old deep coins in the turf where I hunt.As far as positive ID at depth the Vision was less accurate for me than the E-Trac not to mention it loved to ID crown caps as quarters as bad as my F75.Crown caps are not the slightest problem with the E-Trac by the way.And yes I set the cap reject every which way and was still a problem.

I am not posting this reply to bash the Vision but to say the E-Trac works better for me and my style of hunting which is deep old coins in public places like old parks and schools that have been hit hard for many years. Some will say but you have a year with the E-Trac and only 2 months with the Vision and that is very true but when I go back and look at what I was finding the first month with the E-Trac compared to the Vision it is a no contest for me.

As far as the posted document goes... I would like to see it substantiated,Ray.

I also posted this on the V3 forum.

This reminds me of the David Letterman / Sarah Palin fight. Letterman's ratings were tanking due to Conan and Sarah Palin no one was talking about. All of a sudden, everyone was tuning into Letterman and everyone was talking about Sarah Palin.

I have to laugh. Maybe Minelab and White's got together and decided to bring on this fight to make everyone start talking about it in order to get publicity. You know what "they" say....any publicity, good or bad, is great publicity. Maybe sales are slow for both companies and they are trying to drum up business by getting everyone all lathered up.

Who cares which is better. I say, the best machine is the one that is between your ears and knowing how to use it makes it a great detector no matter which brand or model you have.

I have a lady friend that I hunt with. She has the V3. She loves it. I have the E-trac. I love it. We switch off every once in a while. The V3 is a great machine. Yeah the color screen is really nice. But my plain old b&w E-trac tells me what I need to know. I can watch a b&w tv and know what the program was about. Having color display is not a big deal. It is the information that counts. And how to use it.

She finds some really great finds. So do I. I can find things she can't. She can find things I can't. She really works the ground hard and spends the time to find her finds. So do I. Which one is better? Who cares and who knows. I like Ford, you like Chevy. They like Chrysler. That's what this argument reminds me of.

So it all comes down to you and your preferences.

Funny that over the last past history of metal detecting, we still depend on RF to detect metal. There are other technologies like ultra sound that could be used. Common Minelab or White's. Offer us a detector that can give us visual representation of what is in the ground. Enough of this....I got to know the language this detector is telling me. Give me a detector that I can see what is in the ground down to two feet.

Give us some real ground breaking new technology that will rock our detecting world. Not some rehashed relic technology that has outlived its purpose. UNTIL that happens, this argument is like passing gas in a wind storm.

So when I see a new detector based on old technology, all I can say is.........
OH NO!!!! Not this SH#@ again.

Ray,

The XS was my first detector I had purchased since 1980 or so. Didn't realize that crown caps were still a problem for modern detectors until I got the Fisher. Interesting to hear the V3 is the same.
