interference from powerlines

outdoors

New member
How close do the powerlines have to be to cause interference with metal detectors... the other day I was within 50- 75 yards from powerlines and my explorer se pro went crazy...

Not all power lines are on poles.... you would be surprised how many are underground just running to lights and such. To me it seems the drier the soil is getting the more EMI im picking up.... but most seems to come from the ground lines. Those are very difficult to cancel out compared to the pole lines. I think thats simply ground lines arent nearly as deep as those overhead lines are up. This time of year a LOT of juice is being run thru those lines with the hot weather. Also ive noticed in the winter the ground is damper, less juice, and even in some cases in parks they have shut off power going to some lights and facilities.

I think that poor bonding and grounding of the aerial power transmission produces more EMI in certain areas. High scrap copper prices produce alot of theft of ground wires at the poles. One other thing, I have a lot of trouble detecting farms with electric fences. Lots of falsing to the point that backing off on sensitivity really doesn't help. Poor bonding and grounding of the electrical supply.

It is the worst one I have for electrical interference. If you have a smaller or different coil try that. If you only have the Pro Coil then you are stuck with lowering the sens. and noise canceling.

One line in my area goes to the city and court buildings. I hunt a lot that's about 100 feet away and every once in a while right in the middle of a fine hunt, all of a sudden the detector will go nuts and I have to move far away and even sometimes I go somewhere else. I have not been there with my E trac but I am going to give it a try. The Ex II would do battle with it and I did not want to lower the sens on that lot but it would take care of it. If I was searching for shallow targets.

good luck
