International travel - XP Deus - Carry On

Hi all. I'm traveling overseas in a few weeks for a European vacation and I plan to bring my Deus along. I've read several older posts (a few yrs old) about traveling with one's md and that one should take anything with a lithium battery as carry on.

Since I haven't seen a lot of updated info, I thought I'd just share. TSA guidelines online say that for metal detectors to check with the airline directly. So I called United. After 20 mins on hold, the rep told me that yes on can bring a md along under the following rules:

- must fit within carry on bag dimensions
- all batteried components need to be carry on due to fire hazard
- batteries need to be completely drained down

It's the last one that has me a bit concerned. I thought you can ruin the lithium battery if you drain it down completely. I get where they are coming from as they want to be sure there can't be a possibility of self-ignition if a battery has no juice. But I don't want to risk ruining the battery.

Thoughts or any recent experience flying to Europe with your Deus?

I have traveled with my Deus many times without issue. I break it down and put it in a soft carry on. I do as a precaution put electrical tape over the led on the coils. I do not believe there has ever been any known fire hazard from the XP deus batteries. I know many other who also travel in the same way. I would not mention that the battierys are lithium. You must do what you think is right for you.

Have a good trip

Thanks Dalpal. I was planning on taping the light on the coil too. I'd hate to leave it behind and cross my fingers that all goes well both to and fro!

I've done it multiple times as carry on and never had an issue with the TSA or airlines. International flights and domestic. Have fun.

This is what they told me ...

When I called the airlines a few years ago they told me no Lithium Batteries were allowed in the cargo hold because they are considered a fire hazard.
They told me it was OK to bring my Deus on the airplane but only as carry on luggage.

Also as many others will tell you - it's a good idea to put a wrap of black electrical tape around the flashing light on the coil so it doesn't look like a bomb to them !

Good Hunting !

Thanks all! We'll be hunting some woods across the way from a castle ruin which had it's beginnings in the 10th century. :detecting:

4 trips to England with Deus in a Minelab Backpack as carry on. Never a question or problem of any sort. Either direction. Not a problem.

Thanks for the confirmation of info, CT Todd :super:
