Iron mask on/off

Hello guys,
I've just got a Sov GT and would like to know how iron mask switch works. From user manual selecting ON it should get more depth and unmask target from iron better, with cons a little more falsing. On OFF it should be a little quiter but iron could hide a good target.
Is it right?

Yep, you got it. Virtually everybody I think runs with Iron Mask ON. Even with it ON I don't find this machine to false off iron as bad as others I've owned. Not a problem at all to me. Only time I've heard it can be useful to turn it off is in severly mineralized ground or areas where for some reason it's falsing baldly even at low sensitivity settings. Never had to do that myself. In the worst of the worst spots I just drop sensitivity a bit until it settles down, or throw it over into Auto. If the sensitivity has to go much below about 3 or 4PM then my theory is might as well use Auto because it probably will get about the same depth. Well, at least as below say 4PM or so.

ya,i would say you have explained it pretty well there ak-48....took me a long time to learn that iron mask off is smoother with less falsing and slightly less depth....i could never understand why i would hit so many square nails with iron mask on..but now i usually keep iron mask off...much less falsing for me...

I guess I'm just used to using machines with nothing discriminated out including iron. I prefer to hear everything, and that includes the chatter from iron. It helps me map out a spot in my mind and zero in on areas of heavier activity. That's the only thing I miss on the Sovereign...Being able to hear iron in discrimination mode. Not that I think it would unmask better. I feel the 12x10 makes a lower iron setting a mute point from some stuff I've seen in the field, but I would like to be able to hear the iron anyway. So anyway, being used to running zero discrimination like I did on my QXT for instance, not hearing most iron on a GT is like sitting in church to me.

Thank you for your replies, guys. So my guess was correct. Now, i will try it on my ground that are heavily mineralized, maybe a sef coil could help, will see.
Take r.

If your ground is badly mineralized then yes, I think the 12x10 actually rides on less ground than the stock 10" coil due to the sharp tight field generated by the 12x10 in the left/right perspective. Beware of the 15x12 in mineralized ground, though. I found it got less depth on coins in my soil, probably due to seeing too much ground matrix. Be also aware that there are a few guys who say they get more depth in really bad soil with an 8" coil than a 10" coil, but I think the 12x10 might still do better due to it seeing (I believe) less ground than a 10" round coil. Just because I think that it's got a tight/cleaner field than a convention round DD coil, that doesn't mean that I don't feel it doesn't get deeper than a round 10" coil, though. From what I've been digging in even dry conditions it seems to be popping coins deeper more often, but as of yet my two deepest coins have still be at 11" with the stock coil. However, that was under wet conditions at a known deep coin spot, and I haven't tried the 12x10 there when it's wet like that yet. It's still also covering 2" more ground length wise than a 10" coil. It's just that it feels like there is less "fuzz" in the field being generated so it's not soaking in as much ground stew IMHO.

I think Your right, but the only thing that stops me to get one is the white colour of the new SEF. I hate the way white coils become dirty and have a toy look. Maybe the black ones got deformed after a while in hot temperetaure, I donno...but the white ones are a punch in the eye.

Far as I know only the Whites V3 versions are white? Haven't heard of any of the other SEF coils for different machines being white. Anyway, you can easily paint a white one with spray on bed liner and the finish looks just like a factory coil it's so impressive with that "wrinkely" type texture that coils have. Can't even tell it's not a factory plastic coil surface for the most part. I saw a WOT painted that way and man it looked like it came straight from the factory like that, instead of that ugly orange color WOTs have. I use the stuff on the bottom of my coils to drop weight and also not hassle with cleaning under coil covers.
