Iron Mask Question...

Heres my take. Its much like turning the knob on the old disc machines. Much like pulling a curtain across a room. The more you pull the less you see. Those that use the digital screen should notice however that if the digital is disc there is a few number that still will fall to the left of that curtain. Even Jeff Foster wrote about it on the Whites machines that you have some overlap. Yes you are right FAST and DEEP are recovery speeds they make a difference how fast the recovery comes back from desensitizing the coil from a null. The other disc is used for patterns. I know your question is does it unmask those targets differently. What ive noticed is it has to do with the size of the iron as well as the target. Larger iron seems to grab harder and null longer than smaller iron so the recovery returns quicker. This recover isnt always noticed because it happens so quickly. As far as what settings you use .... well Bryce is right, the Explorer is a pretty forgiving machine and even a blind squirrel will find a nut occassionally.

My response was not aimed at you. It is just an age old debate over ferrous/AM being better for hearing good targets over conductive/IM...OR visa versa:surrender:. I just wanted to respond with my opinion...which I did. Now I'm done.:). No more responses on this subject from me:surrender:

"Have you really tried this with the nail and coin? You will see it totally matters what the orientation of the nail to the coin to the coil. Try it."

Chris with all due respect...yes I've tried it...and again....tests or experiments over objects that aren't buried...and haven't been buried for many, many years..mean nothing to me.
I know I have found coins in the ground setting the same way as the experiment in the "air"...and I was able to get a good sound through the silence.

"I also hunt in totally iron-laden sites, that is where the goodies are left. I don't think I've ever pulled a coin that was completely under a chunk of iron, but have found zillions that where buried close to several iron parts. I have a Periscope probe and probe for the coin before digging. Pretty much lets me know where the iron is in relation to the target".

Chris...I have found coins exactly as I stated and I have people who can attest to that fact.

I always hunt in the most iron infested spots I can...because I know there are coins hiding there. I don't use the periscope probe to see....I can see for my own eyes when I'm digging the hole...and as to where the iron is compared to the coin.
The sound I hear obviously depends on where the coin is in relation to the iron...but regardless of that fact...I do still get a sweet sound in some area or I wouldn't be digging it.

"I'm just saying there are some basic tests everyone who owns a detector should try. Like the nail and the coin, and checking depths in auto or manual at sensitivity 1 and then at a much higher sensitivity. They really are eye-openers."

Chris...I agree ...but the only experimenting or testing I do is over actual targets in the field...before I dig them.
All I am saying is that I can and do find deep coins in iron with almost 1/3 of the left side of the screen blacked in iron mask. I do it often...and I do it through the nulls where people tell me I should be "missing" these signals...where if I was in all metal I would hear them better.
To me this is the exact opposite of what I feel and prove to myself every hunt. Because I'm not in all metal I don't hear a zillion other mixed and jumbled tones to try and pick the silver out of. I hear absolute quiet because of all the nulling over iron and when I get even the slightest peep...I can hear it quite well...and it's because of what I just stated.
If one has the confidence that they can hear good signals through the nulls...it will open up a whole new world of deep coins for them in the iron. If however they read or hear they can't...because they are running too much iron mask...and they don't experiment over actual buried targets in the iron...they will never know just how effective the iton mask feature is.
This is why after 100's to 1000's of hours I have spent testing and experimenting over actual buried targets which I felt were coins....that I came to the conclusion that I did.
I have the iron mask setting that for me is optimal for finding coins in iron with the settings I run.
I never even realized until recently that it is the factory preset iron mask setting...lol
If I open the screen just one more number...I start digging iron. If I close it just one more number...then the hidden coins don't signal through the nulling to let me know they're there.
I know I miss a lot of coins...because nobody gets them all...and I am no better of a hunter than anyone else. When I do miss coins though...it isn't because I am hunting with too much iron mask. It's because I just flat out missed it.
As for this thread...we have all made our points...they are all good points...we all have differing opinions...we are all right in what we feel...and we are all friends here. I'm gonna' lock this particular thread so it doesn't consume the whole page:biggrin:
If someone wants to start another thread...that's fine with me...but I'm stayin' out of it
