Is anyone on the forum....

Is there anyone here on the forum who is into wood carving, or knows anything about it? I don't know anything at all about woodcarving, but it is something I have always wanted to try. I have always believed this is something I could do and that I would enjoy! But I'm a little concerned that I might not be able to really get into it now because of the arthritis in my hands. Any advice or info you would like to share?

Lisa

Hi Lisa, I've never done wood carving and my hands are athritic, too, so don't crochet or do embroidery work any more! Difficult to hold onto things without their falling over or dropping them! If you have the will, there will be a way for you to try and learn to see if it really is your thing....My, but your are a busy lady!! Well, I used to be....but those days are past for me as weakness has caught up with me because of illnesses! Have a sinus infection which has made me more ill than usually...so been sleeping a lot and using my oxygen more while doing so! Hope all is going well with you and yours and take time to enjoy doing things for you!!! Ma

I have always liked wood carving but have never tried it. I would say you would have to have alot of patients.

Just seen on Liz's post about what people like. Sandtick and Sailor man are into woodworking do not know about carving though.

Hope you get over that sinus infection real soon, Ma. Those are no fun!

But I do have a couple friends that carve, and one that does it with a chain saw.

I have done some over the years. If you have limitations with your hands you can use power tools like a Dremel tool instead of hammer & chisel. There's lots of ways to overcome handicaps - too many people dont work these things out to their benefit. Steve in so az

Hey Lisa, Well ... I can honestly tell you I have a 'Custom Engraving' business I began a number of years ago but had to place on hold because of my bout w/leukemia. I have done custom wood carving, glass carving, and metal carving. I do enjoy carving on 14" wooden plates and or the top of a coffee table. My glass experience has a different angle, in that I carved wedding announcements on 8"x10" picture frame glass. I also did carving on glassware such as the Ten Commandments, etc. I've been giving it a lot of thought lately to getting the equipment back out and getting back in the swing of things again. It's been several years since I've done anything with it but it's like riding a bike ... you never forget how ... you just get a little rusty. With a little work and practice, I'm sure I could do good work again.

Depends on the limits imposed on your hands. There are many different kinds of woodcarving. Are you thinking of flat work, 3D, chip carving? Power carving might be something to consider. Dremels are a cheap start but the bearings don't last long. Not the easiest thing to hold on to for very long. Foredom flexible shaft machines are wonderful, long lived and versatile but expensive.

What sort of work where you thinking of, I might be able to help steer you better.

I have never had any experience with carving except for bars of soap during Cub scout camp-outs. I wish I had that sort of talent. Seems as it would be very therapeutic.

Well, I'm not THAT limited. Just a little stiffness and soreness. Not as flexible as they used to be. I'm not interested in doing anything fancy! I just want to sit down and "whittle" out a few things. lol Possibly hammer & chisel at some point.

Research and decide what it is you would like to do. Sharp tools, super sharp will make it easier.

SeniorSeeker,
Would love to see some of your work.

Hey There Sandtick, Unfortunately I do not have a camera to take pictures to share with you all. I had a really nice Fuji but a friends daughter was offered a 'New' position as a teacher, in Florida, and needed a good camera to help her with that position. So I donated my camera equipment to this young lady and she's as happy as a bug in a rug with it. One of these days I'll get another camera and I'll take a few pictures of the only remaining work I have left. It's a pair of wine glasses that belonged to my parents when they were still with us. I engraved them and gave them to mom and dad for their 50 wedding anniversary. I've been storing the glasses for a number of years now but will be happy to get them out for a few pictures.
