Is my Explorer II broke?

argambler

New member
I just recently picked up a used Explorer II after getting my old machine stolen. My last machine had the pro coil on it and worked like a champ but this one came with the stock coil. Now comes the problem, When using this detector with my old settings it is very unstable and it start bouncing all around going nuts. I am not even running it a full power; sensitivity @ 23 and gain @ 8. It acts like there is a lot of EMI in the ground. I have tried at many different locations still the same. When I decrease the sensitivity down to about 11 it quiets down and doesn't bounce around anymore. I tried swapping it out with my stock coil from my old machine, it does the same. I don't know if this is a common thing with the stock coils or this detector is messed up. It also doesn't seem to have the depth that I am use to as well. It detects fine on top of the ground but really loses signal beyond about 6". If anyone has any advice or has seen this problem please let me know. Thanks!

with old coils can be if they are used allot try some other or try your coils on another explorer.if its will not heal possibly something bad. good luck

Do you recall having any problems with the stock coil on your last machine? Have you tried a factory reset? There was also some trick with turning it on, then pulling out the battery while its turned on to fix some glitches. I've never tried that one but some swear it works. Then the obvious stuff like take off your coil cover and clean, clean your battery terminal contacts on the battery and in the machine, try a different battery. The fact that you had an identical machine at the same places with no problems makes me think your machine may have issues but hopefully you can trouble-shoot without sending it in. I think my stock coil is more susceptible to EMI in some locations than my other coils but stasys thinks I'm crazy. Call me crazy. JJ

I have the stock coil for exp11 and dont have those probs..I would say double check the connections, clean out coil cover..does it have a probe attached? If it does watch that switch. Before you send it in for repairs I would give it a thorough once over. Good luck

Thanks for your response. I never used the stock coil on my old machine because it had the pro coil on it and I didn't see the need to switch it out, but I bought it off a friend of mine and he told me that it worked fine. I have done all the obvious stuff like clean coil cover, check battery, and did factory reset. When I do a factory reset it does quit bouncing around but as soon as I turn up the sensitivity or change anything it starts going haywire bouncing around. I haven't tried that battery trick, I'll give that a try.

Thanks Frase44NY. Yes I wouldn't think this is a common thing with stock coils. I wouldn't believe that ML would make an awesome machine and the coil would be bad like this. It doesn't have a probe attached and I have checked the connections. Now not sure if this is normal, but the connection that comes out of the machine is flexible(moves) it is not rigid. I am not sure of this connection is suppose to move because I have never change out coils on my last machine to know if it is normal. Does anyone else know?

I thought that it might have had a bad coil so I switched out with my other stock coil and it did the same thing. What are the chances of have 2 bad coils? Plus with either coil it doesn't seem to have the depth in my test ground.

argambler,

I'm guessing you have an open connection somewhere in the connector on the machine side. The problem you describe of it going nuts is almost always caused by a broken wire or failed solder joint at the connector that connects the coil to the explorer. I've had this happen a half dozen times on my XS. Usually I can resolder the connection but sometimes it is a wire break in the coil wire.

But... If you have tried two different coils I'm guessing the problem is not with the coils but on the handle side. Try taking apart the connector and see if you can see a loose wire. I'm also wondering about you being able to have it at 11 and it quiets down. In 11 manual it still should be noisy if it is a open connection. In auto it might have detuned down to nothing.

I would call up Minelab and ask talk to one of the techs and see if he could take a few minutes to talk you thru some troubleshooting tips so by some chance it could be fixed without sending it in . They may be too busy but you never know . If nothing else you're making contact with them personally and getting the best info on how's the best way to send it in .Kudos to all the guys who have suggested ways to possibly solve your problem with their tips .:thumbup:
