Is the 10" Slimline coil more waterproof than the Tornado coil is?

Saw a for sale ad that described the Minelab, Tornado coil as being waterproof down to only one meter. Is that a fact?

If I remember correctly, my old Excalibur !! came with the Slimline coil which is, supposedly, good down to 200 feet. I thought that the two coils were, basically, the same? Did any of the Excaliburs come with the Tornado coil attached or was the coil for the Sovereigns, only, which could explain why it is waterproof down to just one meter?

Thanks - Daddy

Really....... ive been using Sov coils for some time out to neck deep water and have never had an issue with them. IMO they may even be a little hotter than the slimline........ or at least they arent as chatty.

If I remember right the Tornado coil came on the Excal 2 and the regular Excal came with the BBS coils. The Slimline coils were on the Explorer SE which do not fit on the Excalibur's or Sovereign. I seen many call the Tornado coil a Slimline coil along with the coils for the Advantage. When the Excal were bought new you had a choice of the 8 or the 10 inch coil as they are hardwired into the detector, so they did not list a coil replacement in the dealers price list as to change coils the whole detector had to be sent to Minelab so it could be done correctly if you want to have a different coil. Now we know some make a waterproof kits to be able to change coils and if done void the warranty, so they were done on those that were out of warranty. If you wanted to use the same coils on the Excal and the Sovereigns you would have to have these connectors on them to do this and make a adapter cord made if used for the Sovereigns.
A couple of my customers had 2 different Excal one with the 8 inch coil and one with the 10 inch coil as they didn't want anything bigger than the 8 inch for in water use. but found the 10 inch Tornado coil to work better on the beach. I had a few try the WOT coil, but changed to the Sun Ray S-12 or back to the 10 inch Tornado coil as the WOT got heavy after a while. That's the thing some like the WOT and some don't and think it all has to do with where they are hunting and how they hunt.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Rick. That may be where I am getting the term slimline from. ....either from others misidentification or maybe the coil on the E-Trac that I used to have had the name on the coil? Anyways, I'm starting to really like the 8" BBS coil on my older (blue) Excal. In fact, I think I like this blue Excalibur better than I did the Excalibur II's that I have had,. None of them had the 8" coil. They were all 10" models. HH - Daddy

Sovereign Tornado coils is all I use.. no issues at all.. and I go chest deep...

Rick..... im not sure those swapping coils on the Xcal are able to just go from the Sov to the Xcal since most are using the CTX connectors. Am i right Joe?

I am sure they use different connectors, but was thinking on the line of getting the waterproof connector you use on the Excalibur's and doing this to the Excalibur, then making another short cable with the one side connects to the Sovereign and the other connect to the coil cable connector. You would have to do this to all of your coils you plan on using on both machines. Was thinking that would work, wouldn't it??

Rick

You might be better off trying to locate a coupler. Me and Joe have talked about this he may well know where to get one. It would sure simplify the swap from water to Sov.

I've had problems with a Tornado 800 coil I used for the lake in shallow water one season and replaced it with a another new Tornado coil.Like you I was surprised that the description ad stated the Tornado coil was only water proofed to a depth of 1.5 meters.I'm not sure why they make this claim for such a shallow depth unless they consider the coil connector.

That's what I was thinking, Ron. Afterall, the ad that I saw was an ad for the Sovereign + coil.

Looking at the ad it has to be because of the 6 pin connector.Still its confusing information because this is the same base coil used on the Excalibur.I wish Minelab could confirm this and give depth data for the Slim coils with water proof connectors. Thanks
