Is the excal 1000 an excal 2???

No, you have the excalibur 1000, excalibur 800, excalibur 2 1000 and excalibur 2 800, (the last 2 have luminous green decals)

Excal 1000 is 10" coil Excal 800 is 8" coil...the Excal ll 1000 or 800 are the same as the older Excal's but bright green decals and the coil is slimmer than the others.

Not much, i think they only changed the coil for a slimline, put on a lime green coil cover and some luminous stickers, also nimh batteries, no idea about any electronic change, my older excalibur 1000 (blue phones) sounded better than the new one(yellow phones) but thats maybe till i get used to it. I think lots prefer the older machine to the new one, i'm still debating the point.

The Excalibur 2 also has additional shielding around the electronics to make it more stable.

There is a difference. I have all three: Tones are a bit different on the blue and yellow 1000 from the Excal 2, slimline coil on the 2 and a bit more sensitive 2 gold chains although my yellow with the WOT will get them as deep-the blue with the WOT not quite as deep. All 3 are great

Interesting erikk, I put the sound change down to the headphone change from the excali1000 blue to excali 2 yellow(not having tried the old yellow 1000) but if the blue and yellow phoned 1000 sound the same obviously something else has been changed too, not sure its for the good either, the 1000 tones sounded richer, I also seem to have a bigger difference in depth between AM and Disc on the 2. Time will tell

Blue & old yellow sound pretty much the same but different from Excal 2 yellow. Now keep in mind that this is just me and I am also dealing with 69 year old ears that have the high tones pretty well shot. Still U hit a gold ring with either and U know it 99.9%-almost like a nickel but not quite
